Students will investigate how overcrowding shapes protest safety and effectiveness, identify who is most affected, and frame evidence-based questions that will guide later research and investigation design.

Students will investigate why protest overcrowding becomes dangerous or ineffective, evaluate evidence from scientific and civic sources, plan and analyze a crowd-flow investigation, and use feedback to refine a research-backed direction for a crowd-safety solution for the NYCLU and fire department.
Days 4 - 17
Engineer
Engineer
Students will turn their research findings into tested design ideas for safer, more effective protests by studying strong examples, writing a testable hypothesis, planning a prototype, gathering user feedback, and revising their solution based on evidence from peers and community partners.
Days 18 - 26

Do
Students will pilot their crowd-safety solutions in a realistic simulation, collect evidence on movement and risk, revise based on peer and user-centered feedback, and document whether their recommendations could help local organizers run safer, more effective protests.

Students will present the impact of their protest crowd-safety work to an authentic audience and document how their scientific reasoning, design decisions, and professional identity as community organizers developed across the project.
