Pentagon Quest: Compass and Straightedge

Purpose

Students investigate how the seven basic geometric constructions work together to produce an accurate regular pentagon using only a compass, straightedge, and geometric reasoning. Through Ian’s launch, daily build-and-check challenges, critique and revision routines, and a final Geometry Blueprint Museum, they create and refine visible evidence of precision over time. The experience builds facility with construction vocabulary, safe tool use, and standards-aligned reasoning while preparing students to explain and exhibit a before-and-after portfolio and class booklet that show how their methods became more precise.

Learning goals

Students use precise compass-and-straightedge vocabulary, safe tool handling, and the seven basic constructions to build and revise a regular pentagon without measurement. They practice bisecting segments and angles, copying congruent segments and angles, and constructing perpendicular and parallel lines through short build-and-check challenges that lead into the final figure. They analyze rough drafts, use arcs and intersection points to improve accuracy, and explain how multiple basic constructions combine to create a complex shape. They document growth in a before-and-after portfolio, contribute samples and reflections to the class exhibit booklet, and present their reasoning during the Geometry Blueprint Museum and gallery walk with peers, families, and Ian.

Products

Students will produce a sequence of construction artifacts throughout the project: quick build-and-check challenge pages for the seven basic constructions, annotated rough pentagon attempts, daily revised drafts, and short compass-and-straightedge exit reflections. They will compile a before-and-after construction portfolio with one early pentagon, one corrected regular pentagon, and a brief comparison explaining how arcs, intersections, and specific constructions improved precision without measurement. As a class, they will create an exhibit booklet that features selected work samples, one-sentence reflections on how each figure became more precise, and clear labels showing which basic constructions were used. For the final exhibition, students will present a mini Geometry Blueprint Museum display with tools, labeled drafts, process notes, and a polished regular pentagon for the gallery walk and community share-out with peers, families, and Ian.

Launch

Kick off with Ian’s Geometry Jam: Ian joins a live demo-and-try session where students compare a rough freehand pentagon to a compass-and-straightedge version, then notice what makes one more precise. In teams, students rotate through quick hands-on stations that preview the seven basic constructions by fixing one visible error such as an uneven side, off-center angle, or missing perpendicular. Students record one question, one pattern they notice about arcs and intersection points, and choose one construction move to refine as a class before beginning their own first pentagon attempt. End with a brief share-out that introduces the challenge of building an accurate regular pentagon without measuring and sets up the daily reflection-and-revision routine.

Exhibition

Host a Geometry Blueprint Museum where students display their final regular pentagon, an early rough attempt, a corrected version, and labeled drafts showing arcs, intersection points, and which of the seven constructions they used. During a walk-through celebration, students explain their process to peers, families, and Ian, using compass-and-straightedge vocabulary to describe how they improved precision without measuring. Include the class exhibit booklet at each display so visitors can compare work samples and read each student’s one-sentence reflection about how the shape became more accurate. Set up a short gallery-walk feedback routine where visitors ask one question about revision and one question about geometric reasoning, and students respond using evidence from their construction process.
