Learning Goals

1

Students will be able to research a planet or biome using multiple credible sources to justify a mission funding request.

2

Students will be able to construct a persuasive mission proposal using ethos, logos, and pathos to convince a financier.

3

Students will be able to revise a proposal and presentation using peer feedback to strengthen evidence, reasoning, and delivery.

Evidence-Based Mission Proposal Letter with Research Notes

Each student writes an individual proposal letter that argues for funding their mission to a chosen planet or biome. The letter must include researched evidence, credibility checks, clear reasoning, and a fair counterargument with rebuttal.

Financier's Pitch Day Presentation and Public Defense

Small groups deliver a formal pitch to an audience of financiers, using each member’s research to support a shared claim about why their mission should be funded. The team also presents a synthesis of the strongest evidence and responds to audience questions and challenges.

Deeper Learning Competencies
Effective Communication
  • I can share my ideas clearly for my mission letter or pitch, using simple, organized words and a beginning–middle–end structure
  • I can choose and use evidence (like facts from a source or notes from my group) to explain why my biome is worth visiting.
  • I can communicate my claim in a logical order for my letter and presentation, and I can match my wording to a real audience (a financier/investors)
  • I can use multiple sources in my notes and include relevant evidence to support my reasons, while avoiding copying by putting information in my own words.
  • I can synthesize information from several sources to build a persuasive, well-organized message that clearly explains my biome and benefits
  • I can integrate evidence smoothly, cite sources in a standard format, and use tone/word choice to create credibility and emotion appropriate to ethos, logos, and pathos.
  • I can deliver and refine a persuasive presentation with clear, purposeful communication that responds to audience needs during Financier’s Pitch Day
  • I can strategically select and explain the strongest evidence from multiple authoritative sources, cite them accurately to avoid plagiarism, and use feedback to revise both my writing and speaking for greater persuasiveness.
Deeper Learning Competencies
Critical Thinking & Problem Solving
  • I can ask a simple question about a planet/biome and use given information to support a basic claim about why it is worth visiting.
  • I can ask and refine a research question, choose from provided sources, and combine key details to explain my claim using at least two pieces of evidence.
  • I can conduct a short research project by narrowing/broadening my inquiry as needed, searching for relevant information across multiple sources, and synthesizing evidence to answer my question clearly.
  • I can plan and conduct sustained research using effective strategies to find authoritative sources, evaluate which information best supports my purpose, and integrate evidence with citations to solve the persuasion problem for my audience.
Deeper Learning Competencies
Content Expertise
  • I can ask a simple question about a planet or biome and gather information from a few teacher-provided sources to answer it
  • I can use my notes to tell what I learned about my topic in my mission proposal.
  • I can generate a focused research question about my planet or biome and use multiple sources (with help) to find relevant facts
  • I can choose useful information from my notes and explain how it supports my main idea in my letter and presentation.
  • I can conduct a short research project to answer my self-generated question by narrowing or broadening my inquiry as needed
  • I can synthesize ideas from multiple sources to build clear claims and include evidence in my writing and speaking while avoiding copying.
  • I can conduct a sustained, independent research process that deepens my understanding of my question and shows selective synthesis across sources
  • I can evaluate source usefulness, integrate evidence smoothly with correct citation format, and use literary/informational evidence to strengthen my persuasion in my letter and presentation.
Deeper Learning Competencies
Collaboration
  • I can work with a partner or small group to share ideas about my planet/biome and listen to others’ suggestions so our mission pitch is a team effort.
  • I can help set group roles, contribute my research ideas, and use peer feedback to revise our letter or slides with support from my teacher and teammates.
  • I can independently coordinate with my group (e.g., organize tasks, timelines, and materials), synthesize information from our sources, and adjust our claims based on constructive peer feedback.
  • I can lead shared decision-making in my group by evaluating evidence usefulness, resolving disagreement respectfully, and collaboratively producing a clear, well-supported pitch and research citations that reflect everyone’s contributions.
Deeper Learning Competencies
Academic Mindset
  • I can ask and answer questions about my assigned planet/biome using books or videos my teacher provides, and I can share what I learned in my own words
  • I can notice when new information changes my thinking about why the mission should be funded.
  • I can help narrow my research question about my planet/biome and gather information from multiple sources to find details that fit my purpose
  • I can keep track of what I learn by taking simple notes and using evidence from sources to support my claims, without copying.
  • I can independently refine my research question, search for additional information from authoritative sources, and choose the most useful details for my mission proposal
  • I can synthesize notes from multiple sources to explain my thinking, and I can cite sources using a consistent format with teacher support.
  • I can independently conduct a sustained, self-directed research process (including refining my question as I learn) and synthesize multiple sources to strengthen a persuasive case for funding
  • I can assess usefulness of sources, integrate evidence smoothly into my letter/presentation, cite accurately, and reflect on how feedback and new evidence improved my final proposal.
