Students will be able to identify and describe community places from a neighborhood walk using simple maps, grids, and observations to understand relative and absolute location in a community.

2

Students will be able to compare urban, suburban, and rural California communities using pictures, maps, and class sortings to understand how land use changes to meet people’s needs.

3

Students will be able to place events from their investigation in order using timelines and storyboard sequences to understand how communities change over time.

4

Students will be able to investigate community helpers and local organizations such as MTS, the San Diego River Foundation, Old Town, museums, sports teams, and family helpers to explain roles and responsibilities in meeting community needs.

5

Students will be able to collect and organize observations, interview notes, and source information from fieldwork and partner visits to gather evidence about how communities solve problems.

6

Students will be able to design and revise a model of a future San Diego community using research, critique, and STEAM reasoning to solve a simple community problem.

7

Students will be able to present and justify their community model and ideas using drawings, digital displays, art, dance, and writing to explain how different parts of a community work together.

Future San Diego Community Model and Investigation Presentation

Teams create and present a model future San Diego community with a short evidence-based presentation that explains design choices, community roles, land use, and how the team handled differing or surprising findings. The presentation must clearly connect each member's evidence to the shared conclusion.
