Purpose

Students investigate how steam technology makes Western video games more engaging by shaping story, world design, travel, and conflict, using game clips, maps, and historical sources to answer the driving question. After launching with a visit to the Brooks steam museum and approved gameplay analysis, pairs collaborate to research, discuss evidence, and compare game design choices with real steam-era history. Over four weeks, they apply critical thinking, communication, and revision skills to design and exhibit a working steam engine model, using peer critique midway and reflection on what was good, bad, missing, and confusing to improve their work.

Learning goals

Students will analyze how steam engines shaped Western settings, transportation, conflict, and storytelling in video games by comparing game clips, maps, scenes, and historical sources, using evidence in collaborative discussions. They will prepare for and participate in structured discussions by setting roles, goals, and norms with peers, asking and responding to questions, and building on or challenging ideas clearly and persuasively. Working in pairs, they will apply research and design thinking to plan, revise, and exhibit a working steam engine model, using peer critique, reflection on what was good, bad, missing, and confusing, and feedback from the museum experience to improve their work.

Products

Students will create research notes and comparison boards that connect steam engine history to Western video game settings, transportation systems, conflicts, and story moments using game clips and historical sources. In pairs, they will also develop design sketches, safety plans, discussion protocols, and a mid-project peer review record to guide collaboration and revision. The final product is a working steam engine model supported by a short presentation that explains how steam technology increased the fun and challenge of Western video games. The public exhibition will feature pairs demonstrating their models for an audience, with reflection responses addressing what was good, what was bad, what was missing, and what was confusing.

Launch

Start with a field visit to the steam museum in Brooks, OR, where students document how steam power works, sketch engine parts, and interview staff about transportation, labor, and daily life in the American West. Back in class, use approved clips and selected scenes from Red Dead Redemption 2 alongside historical photos and maps so pairs can compare how steam engines shape story, setting, and conflict, then generate questions tied to the essential question. Have students set discussion norms, roles, and deadlines for the 4-week project, and end with a quick reflection on what was good, what was bad, what was missing, and what was confusing. Introduce the final challenge by showing examples of safe small-scale steam models and explaining that pairs will eventually exhibit a working model steam engine.

Exhibition

Host a public showcase at school where pairs present their working steam engine models, explain how steam technology shaped Western game worlds, and cite evidence from game clips, maps, story moments, and historical sources. Invite families, younger students, and the Brooks steam museum partner, and have each pair adapt their presentation for a preschool audience by demonstrating safe movement, simple mechanics, and storytelling connections. Include a feedback station using the reflection prompts—what was good, what was bad, what was missing, and what was confusing—so visitors and peers can respond to both the model and the students’ analysis. End with a short discussion circle where students build on one another’s ideas and compare how different design choices create fun, challenge, and atmosphere in Western video games.
