Purpose

Students investigate how architects and engineers solve problems by launching with If I Built a School, a Dream School Launch Party, and hands-on school-space and blueprint challenges that spark ideas for a better campus. Across eight weekly sessions, they learn school-space vocabulary, study bird’s-eye-view maps and floor plans, and use a simple design process to sketch, measure, revise, and build stable 3D models with labeled features and clear pathways. The work helps students communicate ideas through sketches, model demonstrations, short pitches, gallery-walk feedback, and video reflections that show how their designs changed over time. Technology supports multiple ways to demonstrate learning, document progress with checklist evidence and recordings, and share assessment information with students and families.

Learning goals

Students use ideas from If I Built a School during the launch experiences to label school spaces, explore bird’s-eye view layouts, test building materials, and record an initial dream school idea before beginning the full design process. They follow a simple engineering process to brainstorm, sketch, measure, build, test, and revise a dream school that solves problems for learners and the community. Students read and create maps and blueprints, use school-space vocabulary and labels, apply counting and simple area ideas to plan pathways and room sizes, and build stable 3D models that show how shapes and supports strengthen structures. They present design choices through models, short pitches, and video reflections, then use peer feedback, teacher checklist data, and technology-based self-assessments to improve their work and share progress with families and community partners.

Products

Students create a sequence of design artifacts across the project, beginning with launch products such as labeled school-space cards, a one-minute recorded dream feature pitch, wild idea sketches, and a bird’s-eye-view blueprint with picture-card labels and simple measurements. They add peer-feedback notes from a gallery walk and a revised plan that shows changes made after critique and teacher conferences. They build a stable 3D dream school model from straws, connectors, cardboard, and tape with labeled rooms, entrances, hallways, playgrounds, and other spaces that support learning. For the final exhibition, students present a showcase booth or walk-through display that includes the model, before-and-after sketches, vocabulary cards, teacher checklist highlights, a short live pitch or demonstration of one key feature, and a brief tablet-based video reflection and self-assessment explaining one revision they made, how feedback helped, and why their design choices improve the school experience.

Launch

Gather students for a revised Storybook Launch with a read-aloud of If I Built a School, then pause for wonder talks about how architects and engineers solve problems and revise designs to improve learning spaces. Next, run a Blueprint Blast-Off using a giant floor map or dollhouse furniture so students compare front-view and bird’s-eye-view layouts, label spaces like classroom, hallway, entrance, library, and playground, and sketch one bold idea for their own school. Follow with a quick build test at an Architects in Action station where students use straws, connectors, cardboard, and tape to try strong shapes, then share one glow and one grow with a partner before revising their sketch. End by adding ideas to a class Dream School mural and recording a short tablet pitch or photo reflection as the first formative assessment to guide instruction and share progress with families.

Exhibition

Host a Dream School Showcase Night that begins with a brief relaunch display from the opening book read-aloud and launch activities, showing early sketches, picture-card labels, and first “wild idea” recordings beside final 3D models and blueprints. Families, the school librarian, and public library staff rotate through student-led booths where students give short pitches, demonstrate one stable design feature, and explain one revision they made after the mid-project gallery walk or teacher conference. Include tablets for self-assessment videos, vocabulary cards for key school spaces, and a family feedback station for comments and questions. Share teacher observation checklist highlights with students and families after each presentation to communicate growth in planning, collaboration, vocabulary use, and revision.
