Purpose

Students investigate how natural changes and human actions reshape local habitats by studying organisms in the schoolyard, trail, or stream and using evidence to explain what those organisms need to survive and thrive. Through repeated field observations, classroom analysis, and small-team experiments, they build strong scientific habits aligned to biodiversity and human impact while making sense of changes they can actually see around them. The work leads to public products and conversations with teachers, peers, and community science partners, so students use their findings to make recommendations for protecting or improving a local habitat. Along the way, they strengthen critical thinking, reflection, and responsible decision-making about their relationship to the environment and their use of school time.

Learning goals

Students will ask testable questions about local organisms, make predictions, and design small-scale investigations that compare habitat conditions over time in a schoolyard, trail, or stream setting. They will collect, organize, and interpret repeated site data using annotated sketches, maps, samples, species identification, and simple survey tools to build evidence-based explanations about how natural events and human activities affect survival, reproduction, and biodiversity. Students will communicate findings through a team investigation presentation and Habitat Detective Expo poster that clearly explain methods, results, and recommendations for protecting or improving habitat conditions. They will strengthen critical thinking, reflection, and civic responsibility by revising their work after feedback, discussing what they learned with others, and evaluating whether the experience was a meaningful use of their school time.

Products

Students will create field journals with repeated site data, annotated sketches, maps, sample notes, predictions, and short before-and-after reflections from classroom and outdoor investigations. In small teams, they will design and test a habitat or organism survey, then develop a Habitat Detective Expo poster or digital display that explains their testable question, methods, findings, and evidence-based claims about how a local organism’s needs change with habitat conditions. By the end of the project, each team will deliver an investigation presentation with recommendations for protecting or improving a schoolyard, trail, or stream habitat based on evidence from their repeated observations and tests. Students will also produce revised exhibition materials that incorporate feedback from peers, teachers, and a watershed or environmental partner.

Launch

Open with a Biodiversity Mystery Walk and Living Systems Lab Jam: students rotate through stations with local samples, maps, trail or stream photos, and simple survey tools, then test quick observation methods indoors before trying them in the schoolyard or nearby habitat. In teams, they record patterns, identify organisms they are curious about, and make first predictions about how natural events and human activity might change what those organisms need to survive. Close with a whole-group debrief that surfaces the driving questions, introduces the nature center educator or watershed partner, and sets up each team’s first local investigation focus.

Exhibition

End the project with a Habitat Detective Expo where small teams present posters or short digital slideshows showing their organism surveys, repeated site data, annotated sketches, test methods, findings, and recommendations for improving or protecting a schoolyard, trail, or stream habitat. Invite peers, teachers, families, a local nature center educator, and a watershed nonprofit partner to circulate, ask questions, and give feedback on how well each team explains the effects of natural and human-caused habitat change on organism survival and biodiversity. To extend the audience, students can also share a concise investigation presentation with other science teachers or local science organizations, using evidence from before-and-after ecosystem comparisons to support their claims. Build in a brief reflection wall or closing discussion where students name what they learned, what will stay with them, and whether the project was a worthwhile use of their school time.
