Learning Goals

1

Students will be able to formulate investigable questions about movement to California missions and the effects on Indigenous communities and newcomers.

2

Students will be able to analyze artifact replicas, historic images, and route maps from the California mission era to identify what they show about migration and daily life.

3

Students will be able to investigate how mission-era movement changed the lives of Indigenous communities and newcomers using short research notes and source comparisons.

4

Students will be able to compare multiple perspectives on California missions, including Indigenous perspectives and newcomer perspectives, to identify agreements, differences, and missing voices.

5

Students will be able to document evidence from sources and explain how each source helps answer the guiding question about mission-era migration.

6

Students will be able to justify conclusions about how movement to California missions changed daily life by connecting evidence from maps, artifacts, images, and oral guidance from a local tribal cultural center educator.

7

Students will be able to evaluate limitations in their investigation by naming what their sources did and did not show about Indigenous communities and newcomers.

Teams create a mini-museum exhibit with labeled artifacts or drawings, a route map, evidence captions, and a short oral briefing for Museum Night. The exhibit must synthesize individual research into one shared claim, explain limitations, and include at least one area of disagreement or uncertainty.
