Purpose

Students investigate how people in local careers use skills, tools, teamwork, and problem solving to serve the community, then connect those insights to their own future paths. Through plaza observations, a community job pop-up, interviews, note-taking, sketching, audio reflections, and simple prototype design, they research and compare careers by tools, tasks, training, and community impact. Over six weeks, students strengthen collaborative discussion, respectful questioning, writing, critique, revision, and multimedia presentation skills while building a portfolio that shows how their ideas change over time. The experience ends with a public showcase and gallery walk where students present evidence of learning, explain revised prototypes, and share one next step they want to explore.

Learning goals

Students will research community careers through plaza observations, pop-up experiences, interviews, note-taking, sketching, and audio reflections, then organize what they learn into categories such as tools, tasks, training, and community impact. They will practice respectful discussion skills by asking clear questions, listening closely to community partners and classmates, building on others’ ideas, and giving evidence-based feedback during critique circles and presentation rehearsals. Students will use a simple design process to define a problem, compare possible solutions, test and revise small prototypes, and explain how materials, tools, and teamwork help workers serve the community and protect resources. They will create and revise a portfolio, reflection poster, and final slide or display that use writing, visuals, and speaking to show how their thinking about future paths has changed over time.

Products

Students will create interview notes, career sketches, audio reflections, and simple prototype drafts as they learn from plaza observations, pop-up experiences, and visits with community partners. Throughout the project, they will add to a portfolio that includes organized comparisons of careers by tools, tasks, training, and community impact, along with revised reflection posters showing how their ideas are changing. By the end, each student will produce a Future Paths Gallery Walk station with a career comparison poster, interview notes, sketches, and one revised prototype. They will also complete a Community Career Showcase exhibit table and a final slide or display presentation featuring one portfolio artifact and a clear next step they want to explore.

Launch

Kick off the project with a community plaza walk where students notice local businesses, sketch tools or workspaces they see, and jot questions about how each job helps the community. Follow it with a fast-paced Community Job Pop-Up in the classroom or multipurpose room, where partners like firefighters, doctors, business owners, local artists, or IID staff bring a tool, mini demonstration, or short task for students to try. Students practice respectful questions, active listening, note-taking, and one short audio reflection naming one academic skill they used and one social skill they practiced. Close by introducing the driving question and having students sort their first observations into categories such as tools, tasks, training, and community impact.

Exhibition

Host a Community Career Showcase where students present their final slide or class-made display, share one portfolio artifact, and explain how their ideas about future paths changed to families, classmates, and invited community partners. Pair this with a Future Paths Gallery Walk in which students staff exhibit stations featuring career comparison posters, interview notes, sketches, reflection posters, and one revised prototype organized around tools, tasks, training, and community impact. Include a brief audience feedback routine so guests can leave questions or comments about students’ respectful interviewing, research, and design thinking. End with student audio reflections or live closing remarks about one academic skill and one social skill they used during the project.
