Learning Goals
Students will be able to explain place value relationships in multi-digit whole numbers and decimals to the hundredths place.
Students will be able to round decimals to any specified place using place value reasoning.
Students will be able to add, subtract, multiply, and divide decimals to hundredths using models and written methods.
Students will be able to interpret and explain patterns when multiplying or dividing by powers of 10.
Students will be able to find whole-number quotients for four-digit dividends and two-digit divisors using area models or equations.
Students will be able to collaborate to design and revise a real-world number sense guide that communicates mathematical reasoning clearly.
Products
Decimal Detective Investigation Notebook
Students compile a personal investigation record with question notes, number comparisons, models, calculations, and written reasoning from menus, receipts, measurements, or other real-world sources. The notebook shows how each student independently used place value to investigate and justify answers.
Real-World Place Value Number Sense Guide and Showcase Display
Teams create a formal guide or display that explains a shared investigation of prices, measurements, or community data using decimals, rounding, powers of 10, and division. The final presentation must synthesize each member’s evidence, explain methods, address disagreements or unusual results, and conclude with warranted findings and next questions.
