Purpose

Students investigate how ratios, unit rates, fractions, decimals, and percents help people make smart grocery decisions when money is limited. Working in teams, they build and revise a best-value shopping plan with feedback from a grocery store partner, using real price cards and budget constraints to solve an authentic problem. The experience develops math reasoning, communication, collaboration, and self-direction as students explain their choices, reflect on challenges, and present their final basket plan and learning growth to an audience.

Learning goals

Students will compute and compare unit rates and ratios from grocery price cards to identify best-value choices and justify decisions within a limited budget. They will solve multistep shopping problems using fractions, decimals, and percents, checking whether their answers are reasonable and revising plans based on feedback from peers, the teacher, and grocery store partners. Students will collaborate to design, critique, and improve a team shopping plan, then communicate their reasoning clearly through a short pitch, exhibit materials, and a final reflection slide.

Products

Teams create draft shopping baskets, ratio tables, and budget notes throughout the project as they compare grocery price cards, test unit-rate choices, and revise plans after feedback from peers and the teacher. They also produce a mini grocery exhibit with sample baskets, price comparisons, and clear best-value explanations that grocery store guests and classmates can review during the Snack Savvy Expo or Budget Boss Market Walk. By the end, each team shares a short presentation slide deck that highlights one math success, one budgeting challenge, and one example of teamwork growth. For the final pitch, students use their display materials to explain how their calculations changed over time and why their final basket makes the best use of a limited budget.

Launch

Open with a Basket Budget Battle in which teams handle real or mock grocery items and price cards from a grocery store partner, then quickly sort choices by best value using ratios and unit rates. Follow with a Cart Countdown Challenge where each team builds the strongest basket under a tight budget, compares unit rates, and justifies every choice aloud as prices include fractions, decimals, and percent discounts. End the launch with a short challenge prompt from the grocery store guest: design a plan that makes the best use of a limited budget, and record one first-step strategy for both math and teamwork before the project begins.

Exhibition

Host a Grocery Games Showcase or Snack Savvy Expo where teams set up mini store-style stations featuring sample baskets, ratio tables, unit rate charts, and budget notes for classmates, families, teachers, and a grocery store partner. Each team gives a short grocery store pitch explaining their best-value choices, one math success, one budgeting challenge, and how their calculations and decisions changed over the project, supported by a final reflection slide. Invite visitors to ask questions about unit rates, percents, and trade-offs, so students defend their reasoning and describe how teamwork improved their plan. A poster-gallery format keeps the event manageable in a short timeframe while giving every student a speaking role and a clear way to share growth.
