Learning Goals
Students will be able to analyze Giant’s Causeway photographs, maps, and rock samples to explain how basalt columns formed from molten rock and later changed through weathering and erosion.
Students will be able to construct and revise a model of the rock cycle to show how basalt can cool, solidify, weather, erode, and become part of new Earth materials.
Students will be able to interpret evidence from a comparison of Giant’s Causeway, Reynisfjara, and a local stone such as limestone to justify how rock properties, formation, and use are linked to geoscience processes and resource distribution.

Giant’s Causeway Investigation Notebook
A structured research notebook documenting the student’s question, observations, sample tests, model revisions, source notes, and personal explanation of how the basalt columns formed and continue to change. It must include raw data, one basic visual such as a table or sketch, and a short reflection on the limits of the student’s model.
Giant’s Causeway Visitor Education Exhibit and Protection Proposal
A team investigation report or presentation for site managers that explains the basalt columns, synthesizes evidence from all members, and recommends ways to help visitors protect the landscape. It must include shared findings, visuals or data displays, limitations or conflicting evidence, and a clear visitor-action message.
