Learning Goals & Products

Learning Goals

1

Students will be able to investigate how sound waves travel through different media and how pitch and volume change wave patterns using observations, diagrams, and simple models.

2

Students will be able to analyze how instruments create vibration and how those vibrations can be translated into visual sound-wave representations through sketches, spectrograms, and models.

3

Students will be able to formulate and refine investigable questions about a song’s sound, genre, and cultural context using weekly critique routines and research journals.

4

Students will be able to collect and document research notes on genre history, lyrics, artists, and local music history from primary and secondary sources.

5

Students will be able to analyze patterns in songs, album covers, and social change across time by comparing evidence from listening stations, journal entries, and source materials.

6

Students will be able to justify design choices in an original album cover and sound-wave artwork using evidence from music analysis, scientific observation, and cultural research.

7

Students will be able to evaluate the strengths and limitations of their investigation methods, including listening notes, visual models, and source selection.

Research Journal and Artist Statement for a Personal Album Cover

Students will maintain a research and analysis journal that documents question development, source notes, song critique routines, wave observations, and design decisions for one personally selected song. The final submission includes the journal plus a polished album cover with a written artist statement explaining the evidence behind the design.

Collaborative Music Investigation Presentation with Visual Evidence Board

Students will create an album cover for the song they choose that connects both to themselves and some aspect of social change in history. The front side of the album cover will include a visual represention of the sound waves, an artistic representation of what they song influenced in our culture, and how the song is personally connected to the student.
