Learning Goals

1

Students will be able to ask and refine testable questions about how a chosen object, tool, or system works using observations and clues from hands-on investigation.

2

Students will be able to evaluate which observations or measurements best answer a question about how something works.

3

Students will be able to collect and document evidence from simple tests, models, drawings, and expert conversations about a selected object or system.

4

Students will be able to analyze patterns and cause-and-effect relationships in their evidence to explain how parts work together.

5

Students will be able to develop a simple labeled model or diagram that shows how the shape or parts of an object help it function.

6

Students will be able to justify a claim about how a chosen object or system works using specific evidence and explain any limitations or unanswered questions.

7

Students will be able to collaborate in short investigations by listening, sharing roles, and contributing ideas during reflection circles and peer discussions.

Personal Investigation Notebook: How My Chosen Object Works

Students maintain a research notebook that records their wonder question, investigation steps, observations, labeled sketches, test notes, and personal explanation of how their chosen object or system works. The notebook must show how their thinking changed over time and include one limitation or new question.

Class Clue Exhibit: Evidence-Based How-It-Works Station

Teams create a formal investigation station for the class showcase that synthesizes each member’s evidence into one shared explanation of how the chosen object or system works. The station must include a model or diagram, evidence display, explanation of methods, noted anomalies or conflicting findings, and a concluding claim with future questions.
