Learning Goals & Products

Learning Goals

1

Students will be able to analyze frequency, wavelength, and wave speed data using the wave equation to justify how sound behaves in different media.

2

Students will be able to calculate and convert sound measurements using scientific notation, exponents, and metric prefixes to accurately predict and report target frequencies.

3

Students will be able to design, prototype, and test a musical instrument or interactive sound demonstration that meets specified criteria for teaching wave properties.

4

Students will be able to communicate technical information about sound technology and wave behavior to an elementary audience using evidence from their prototype and calculations.

Products

individual

Sound Design Notebook and Frequency Analysis Brief

Each student will submit an individual notebook showing two original design concepts, annotated sketches, wave calculations, and a decision matrix that justifies one preferred solution. The brief must explain how the chosen idea would meet the project criteria for target frequencies or teaching wave properties.

team

Tuned Instrument or Interactive Wave Demonstration with Exhibition Poster

Teams will build and revise either a playable instrument tuned to target frequencies or an interactive demonstration that teaches wave properties to visitors. They will present the finished prototype with a poster, test evidence, and a concise explanation of how math guided design decisions and improvements.
