Purpose

Students explore who they are as learners and community members by identifying their interests, talents, strengths, and goals, then connecting those “superpowers” to careers that may fit them. Through an All About Me portfolio, home projects, writing pieces, and short video reflections, they practice asking questions, sharing ideas clearly, revising their work, and using digital and visual tools to tell their story. The work builds toward a student-led family conference where students present their poster, RIASEC reflection, goal writing, and future-career mini poster to explain what they have learned about themselves and their place in the world of work.

Learning goals

Students will ask and answer who, what, where, when, why, and how questions about themselves, read-alouds, and career texts to gather key details for their poster, writings, and mini career poster. They will write and revise several focused pieces—an All About Me description, a small-moment narrative from the RIASEC party, a reflection on their strengths and talents, a goals piece, and a best-part-of-me writing—using feedback from peers and adults. Students will use drawings, posters, audio/video recording, and simple digital tools to clearly present their ideas and explain how their interests and talents connect to jobs they may enjoy. They will practice collaborative conversations, presentation skills, and self-reflection by rehearsing with classmates and adults, revising their speaking cards, and leading a family conference portfolio share.

Products

Students will create an All About Me poster, a narrative writing piece about a small moment from the RIASEC party, a RIASEC reflection about their strengths and talents, a goals writing piece for second grade, and an English writing piece about the best part of themselves. Over the six weeks, they will also complete two home projects: a take-home All About Me poster with likes and important dates, and a future-career mini poster showing what they want to be when they grow up. Students will record short video reflections during the unit and produce a final reflection video explaining their poster, what they learned about themselves, and which jobs match their “superpowers.” The final portfolio for the family conference will include selected writings, the All About Me poster, the future-career mini poster, presentation cards, and a student-led presentation supported by drawings and digital media.

Launch

Kick off with a “Superpower Spotlight Day” circle in which each child brings a favorite object or photo and shares one interest, one talent, and one job they wonder about. Read aloud a few picture books about community jobs with a visiting librarian, then guide students to ask and answer who, what, where, when, why, and how questions about the workers they meet in the stories. Create a class “Our Superpowers and Future Jobs” chart that connects students’ interests and strengths to possible careers, and introduce the guiding question about how their unique superpowers help them find their place in the world of work. End with a quick video reflection where students point to their object or photo and say one new thing they noticed about themselves.

Exhibition

Host a student-led family conference and celebration walk where each child shares an All About Me portfolio that includes the poster, RIASEC reflection, goal writing, narrative small-moment piece, and future-career mini poster. Students present at their display space, use presentation cards they revised after a rehearsal with classmates and an adult mentor, and explain how their interests, talents, and goals connect to a job they may enjoy. Set up a reflection station where families watch each child’s short video describing what they learned about themselves and their “superpowers.” Invite the librarian, families, and community helpers who participated in the unit to attend, ask questions, and leave encouraging feedback.
