Record at least 6 place-based observations about temperature shifts, wind exposure, shade, drainage, humidity clues, or precipitation evidence, then connect those observations to possible community impacts such as comfort, safety, transportation, sports, or campus routines. End with a quick whole-class launch to surface patterns and introduce the project question and final Forecast Fest products.

# What teachers do
1 Launch the activity by introducing the local weather mystery focus, naming the essential question, reviewing the walking route and safety expectations, and showing how to use the thermometer, wind ribbon, moisture clues checklist, and investigation notebook to capture place-based evidence and community impacts. (10 min)
2 Form observation teams, assign rotating roles such as temperature reader, wind watcher, note-catcher, and community impact spotter, and have each team predict 1-2 places on the route where weather conditions might differ and why. (10 min)
3 Complete the weather mystery walk across the route, stopping at multiple locations to record at least 6 observations about temperature shifts, wind exposure, shade, drainage, humidity clues, or precipitation evidence while connecting each note to a possible effect on comfort, safety, transportation, sports, or campus routines. (30 min)
4 Pause in teams after the walk to compare notes, identify 2-3 patterns across locations, and draft one possible community weather question your evidence suggests is worth studying through the weather station project. (10 min)
5 Hold a whole-class launch share where each team reports one strong observation, one possible explanation, and one community impact, then chart common patterns and emerging weather mysteries that could guide the next activity and future data-story presentation. (15 min)
6 Close with a circle reflection where you connect your observations back to the essential question, name one scientific insight and one teamwork strength from the day, and mark one notebook page or note set to save as an early Forecast Fest artifact. (15 min)
Preparation (8 items)
  • Map a short, accessible campus or neighborhood route with 4-6 safe stopping points that are likely to show variation in shade, wind exposure, surface temperature, drainage, and moisture evidence.
  • Gather and test enough handheld thermometers, wind ribbons, clipboards or hard writing surfaces, moisture clues checklists, and investigation notebooks for all teams.
  • Prepare a simple field note template or notebook prompt that includes location, observation type, evidence, possible explanation, and community impact.
  • Check the weather forecast, identify any safety concerns, and prepare an indoor backup route or window-based observation version if conditions change.
  • Create team role cards so observation responsibilities are clear and participation is distributed during the walk.
  • Prepare an anchor chart or board space for the whole-class pattern share with headings such as observation, evidence, possible explanation, community impact, and possible project question.
  • Coordinate in advance with the nearby university or community college science department by collecting 2-3 sample questions or prompts that can later help you compare student observations with scientific weather research.
  • Identify any students who may need mobility, sensory, language, or executive functioning supports and prepare alternatives such as paired support, reduced route length, visual vocabulary, or voice-note recording.
Student-facing instructions
You will investigate how weather conditions change across places you use every day. In a small team, you will carry simple observation tools such as a handheld thermometer, wind ribbon, moisture clues checklist, and your investigation notebook. Your task is to move through the route, stop at several locations, and record at least 6 specific observations about temperature, wind, shade, drainage, humidity clues, or evidence of recent precipitation. For each observation, you will also note a possible explanation and a possible community impact such as comfort, safety, transportation, sports, or campus routines. Divide roles so everyone contributes, listen carefully to each other’s evidence, and compare notes at the end of the walk. Then you will help identify patterns, suggest a local weather question worth studying, and join the closing circle reflection by naming one scientific insight and one teamwork strength you used today. Keep your notes organized because they will become early evidence for your data-story presentation and Forecast Fest display.
