Students launch the project by visiting the proposed garden area with UC Riverside, California Rare Fruit Growers, and VESD Grounds and Maintenance staff. Using clipboards, simple site maps, compasses, thermometers, and observation sheets, they document sunlight, soil texture, wind, water flow, existing plants, and signs of human impact through notes, quick sketches, nature diagrams, and one short poem or journal entry. Teams end by marking possible themed zones for observation, research, and experiments on a large shared base map and naming questions they still have about who will use the space.
