In small groups, students examine a set of role cards, simple map images, daily life illustrations, and artifact picture cards, then sort evidence under samurai, peasant, artisan, and merchant headings on a structured chart. Students record what each source shows about jobs, goods, services, and geography, then draft a short empathy note from one role’s point of view about what that person needed from others. Groups exchange charts, give feedback to 2 peers using sentence stems, receive feedback, and revise at least one note or connection before turning it in.

|---|---|
| 1 | Launch the task by reminding students of the social classes they explored yesterday and introducing the goal: to use evidence from pictures, maps, and role cards to figure out how people in feudal Japan depended on one another. Model 1 sample source and think aloud using grade-appropriate words such as evidence (proof), artifact (an object from the past), and geography (features of a place). (5 min) |
| 2 | In groups, students examine the first round of role cards, map images, daily life illustrations, and artifact picture cards. They place each source under samurai, peasant, artisan, or merchant on a structured chart and record what the source shows about jobs, goods, services, and where the role fits in the town or countryside. (12 min) |
| 3 | Groups continue sorting any remaining sources and draw at least 3 arrows or short notes showing interdependence, such as who grows food, who makes tools, who trades goods, and who provides protection. Pause midway for a quick check that every group is using evidence from the source rather than guessing from prior knowledge. (8 min) |
| 4 | Each student chooses 1 role and drafts a short empathy note from that person’s point of view using sentence starters such as 'I am a ___,' 'I help by ___,' and 'I need ___ from ___ because ___.' Encourage students to include at least 2 accurate details from the sorted evidence and 1 connection to another social class. (7 min) |
| 5 | Groups exchange charts and empathy notes with another group and give feedback to 2 peers using sentence stems such as 'One detail that seems accurate is ___,' 'A connection that could be clearer is ___,' and 'I wonder if this role also needed ___ from ___.' Students read the feedback, discuss it, and revise at least 1 note or 1 recorded connection on their chart. (8 min) |
| 6 | Close with a fast circle share in which each group names 1 new connection they found among samurai, peasants, artisans, and merchants and 1 collaboration skill they used well, such as listening, sharing materials, or inviting others to speak. Collect charts and empathy notes for use in later model-building and oral explanation planning. (5 min) |
Preparation (8 items)
- Prepare group sets of role cards, simple map images, daily life illustrations, and artifact picture cards with a balanced mix representing samurai, peasants, artisans, and merchants.
- Create and copy a structured evidence chart with four headings for the social classes and recording spaces for jobs, goods, services, and geography.
- Prepare sentence starter strips for empathy notes and peer feedback so students can speak and write with support.
- Select 1 sample source to model how to identify evidence and connect it to a role without giving away answers from the full set.
- Organize materials in labeled folders or trays for each group, including pencils, chart paper or recording sheets, sticky notes, and any revision tools.
- Preview the image and card texts for reading level demands and add supports such as highlighted key words, picture cues, or partner-reading options for students who need them.
- Plan groupings that support discussion and shared participation, and assign roles if needed such as reader, sorter, recorder, and discussion leader.
- Set up a visible timer and display the essential question and key vocabulary with brief student-friendly definitions.
Student-facing instructions
You will work with your group to study role cards, maps, pictures of daily life, and artifact images from feudal Japan. Your task is to sort each source under samurai, peasant, artisan, or merchant on your group chart, then write what the source shows about jobs, goods, services, and geography. After sorting, you will use your evidence to show at least 3 connections among the social classes. Then you will write a short empathy note from one role’s point of view about what that person needed from others. You will trade charts with another group, give feedback using sentence stems, and revise at least 1 idea before turning in your work. You will need your source cards, evidence chart, pencil, and sentence starter sheet. The goal is to use evidence to explain how the social classes depended on one another and to gather ideas you can later use in your village model or castle town diorama.
