Launch
Students will launch the Build and Balance Lab by testing simple structures made from paper, straws, and craft sticks, then use shape and motion vocabulary to describe what helped a model stay strong, balanced, or move. They will sketch an early design, label key lines and shapes, and begin using evidence from quick tests to explain how geometry can solve a classroom structure or motion problem.

Students will investigate how triangles, squares, arches, lines, and angles affect whether a model stands, balances, or moves, then define a simple engineering problem with clear criteria and constraints. They will study examples from the Fleet Science Center connection, compare structure ideas with evidence from quick tests, and create labeled sketches that explain how shape choices support function.

Choose & Prototype
Students will compare possible shape-based solutions, choose a team prototype with evidence, build a rapid model from paper, straws, and craft sticks, and run simple fair tests to collect data about standing, balancing, or moving. They will use geometry and physical science vocabulary, give feedback to 2 peers, receive feedback, and revise their prototype plans before moving into the next phase.
