The Challenge

When fear, difference, and unequal power shape how societies respond to newcomers or marginalized groups, relationships between communities can fracture, increasing isolation, mistrust, and exclusion. During World War II and in many communities today, language barriers, propaganda, and social bias have limited access to support, weakened civic belonging, and made it harder for people to build safe, connected lives.

Challenge Question

How can we, as 8th graders in Sheffield, learn from World War II to understand how fear, difference, and power shape relationships between societies and communities, and use that learning to help immigrant families in nearby rural communities feel more welcomed and connected? How can we work with local immigrant support organizations to create a podcast episode that shares oral histories, compares past and present experiences, and offers realistic recommendations for strengthening belonging today?

Learning Partners and Clients

Sheffield, MA is a core learning partner, giving students a local place-based lens on how communities respond to fear, difference, and belonging. Local immigrant support organizations in Berkshire County can serve as client partners by sharing current needs related to language access, social isolation, and welcoming services for immigrant families in nearby rural communities. These partners can help students ground their podcast research, interviews, and recommendations in real community experiences and relationships.

I can step into a launch experience using World War II stories, local community scenarios from Sheffield, MA, and partner voices from immigrant support organizations to identify how fear, difference, and power can cause isolation and weaken relationships, and ask questions about the root causes of belonging and exclusion today.

I can analyze World War II case studies and oral history clips to explain how communities responded to fear, difference, and power in ways that either harmed or strengthened relationships. I can interview local partners or review their stories to identify current challenges immigrant families in nearby rural communities face with language access, isolation, and welcoming services. I can compare past and present community experiences to learn from history and critique different perspectives about who belongs, who gets support, and why. I can gather evidence from maps, photos, community stories, and local observations to understand how place, environment, and daily life affect connection, safety, and support networks.

I can share a draft podcast and recommendation set with classmates and community partners, collect feedback and response data on what ideas feel most useful and welcoming, and use that evidence to judge how well our work could strengthen understanding and connection in the community.

I can share our podcast, research story, and recommendations in a community listening event with peers, families, school staff, Sheffield partners, and local immigrant support organizations, while reflecting on how I grew in listening, perspective-taking, and relationship-building through this project.
