Purpose

The purpose of this project is to engage students in applying probability and statistics to real-world scenarios by acting as sports analysts in a ping pong tournament. Through collaborative and hands-on activities, students will develop critical thinking and communication skills as they predict tournament outcomes based on player data. This experience aims to deepen their understanding of mathematical concepts and enhance their ability to make informed decisions using statistical reasoning.

Learning goals

Students will develop skills in calculating probabilities and making predictions based on statistical data, focusing on real-world applications in sports analytics. They will enhance their ability to create, interpret, and present statistical graphs and charts, gaining a deeper understanding of variance and standard deviation. Through collaboration and communication, students will strengthen their ability to work effectively in teams, articulate their ideas, and engage in critical reflection on their analytical processes.

Standards
  • [Common Core] CCSS.Math.Content.7.SP.C.6 - Approximate the probability of a chance event by collecting data on the chance process that produces it and observing its long-run relative frequency, and predict the approximate relative frequency given the probability.
Competencies
  • Collaboration - Students co-design projects with peers, exercise shared-decision making, strengthen relational agency, resolve conflict, and assume leadership roles.
  • Critical Thinking & Problem Solving - Students consider a variety of innovative approaches to address and understand complex questions that are authentic and important to their communities.
  • Effective Communication - Students practice listening to understand, communicating with empathy, and share their learning through exhibiting, presenting and reflecting on their work.
  • Content Expertise - Students develop key competencies, skills, and dispositions with ample opportunities to apply knowledge and engage in work that matters to them.
  • Academic Mindset - Students establish a sense of place, identity, and belonging to increase self-efficacy while engaging in critical reflection and action.

Products

Students will create detailed player profiles featuring statistical analyses, predictions, and visual graphs, which will be displayed during the exhibition. They will also design a multimedia presentation showcasing their prediction models, including video clips of matches, statistical charts, and commentary for the Bracketology Bash. Throughout the project, students will develop prediction brackets that reflect their understanding of probability and statistics, which will be shared and critiqued during the exhibition.

Launch

Kick off the project with a "Probability Playoff," where students participate in a mini ping pong tournament. As they play, they will collect data on their own performance, such as win/loss records and scores. This hands-on activity introduces them to key concepts of probability and statistics, providing a practical foundation for their upcoming analyses.

Exhibition

Host a "Bracketology Bash" where students present their prediction models and statistical analyses to family and friends. Set up interactive stations with player profiles, graphs, and multimedia presentations showcasing their work. Include a live commentary session during the tournament finals, allowing students to demonstrate their analytical skills and engage the audience.
