The purpose of this project is to immerse middle school students in the art and cultural heritage of Japan through the hands-on creation of koinobori, traditional carp kites. By constructing these kites from recycled materials, students explore cultural symbolism and the significance of sustainable art practices. This project fosters deep understanding and appreciation for global traditions while enhancing students' skills in design, storytelling, and resourcefulness. Through collaboration and reflection, students connect personal expression with cultural narratives, culminating in a meaningful exhibition that celebrates diversity and cultural exchange.
Learning goals
Students will explore cultural symbolism through the creation of Japanese fish kites (koinobori), gaining insight into how traditional crafts express cultural values and identity. They will enhance their skills in 3D form construction, design, and the use of recycled materials, encouraging creativity and resourcefulness. By engaging in cultural research and storytelling, students will deepen their appreciation for Japanese traditions while reflecting on the global influence of such practices. Through this project, learners will foster collaboration, critical thinking, and presentation skills, culminating in an exhibition that connects their artistic expressions with a broader audience.
Products
Students will construct vibrant carp kites, each uniquely designed using recycled materials, demonstrating artistic expression and cultural understanding. These kites will be part of a larger installation, forming a collective mural that narrates diverse cultural stories and sustainability themes. Alongside their kites, students will produce reflective poems or short prose inspired by Japanese culture, adding a narrative depth to the exhibition. Additionally, a guided gallery tour script will be developed, allowing students to articulate their design process and cultural insights to an audience.
Launch
Kick off the project with a lively 'Koinobori Kickoff Festival' featuring interactive stations where students delve into elements of Japanese Children's Day through storytelling, traditional music, and initial kite design sketching. Host a 'Material Exploration Day,' inviting students to bring recyclable materials from home and brainstorm innovative uses for their carp kites. Integrate a 'Cultural Exploration Workshop' with rotating booths that focus on Japanese art and symbolism, where students create small art projects that symbolize personal meanings as inspiration for their kites.
Exhibition
Host a vibrant 'Koinobori Celebration Day' where students showcase their carp kites outdoors, surrounded by traditional decorations, inviting family and community for cultural activities and games. Feature a 'Symbolism Through Kites' mural wall, allowing students to hang their kites with personalized plaques narrating their cultural connections. Conclude with a 'Story in the Wind' evening event, where students recite cultural stories linked to koinobori, while guests engage in a silent auction to support local initiatives.
