Purpose

The purpose of this learning experience is to provide middle school students with an opportunity to engage deeply with their personal and cultural identities through the creative process of crafting accordion zines. By exploring diverse elements of their identities, students build a sense of belonging, enhance critical thinking, and practice effective communication and collaboration with peers. This project encourages students to apply their unique perspectives in artistic expression, fostering self-reflection and community understanding. Through hands-on activities, students develop valuable skills that resonate with their academic and personal growth, culminating in an exhibition that celebrates their narratives and insights.

Learning goals

Students will develop competencies to reflect critically on their personal and cultural identities through visual storytelling. They will collaborate with peers to co-design their zines, fostering shared decision-making and leadership capabilities. The project will enhance students' abilities in effective communication by practicing active listening and empathetic expression during peer critiques and presentations. Additionally, students will hone their critical thinking skills by exploring diverse cultural narratives and employing innovative approaches to art as a form of personal and community expression.

Competencies
  • Academic Mindset - Students establish a sense of place, identity, and belonging to increase self-efficacy while engaging in critical reflection and action.
  • Collaboration - Students co-design projects with peers, exercise shared-decision making, strengthen relational agency, resolve conflict, and assume leadership roles.
  • Content Expertise - Students develop key competencies, skills, and dispositions with ample opportunities to apply knowledge and engage in work that matters to them.
  • Effective Communication - Students practice listening to understand, communicating with empathy, and share their learning through exhibiting, presenting and reflecting on their work.
  • Critical Thinking & Problem Solving - Students consider a variety of innovative approaches to address and understand complex questions that are authentic and important to their communities.

Products

Students will contribute to a collaborative class zine anthology, each creating a personal zine that reflects an aspect of their identity, which will be beautifully bound together for an exhibition display. Additionally, they will photograph and document their creative process, culminating in a digital slideshow or video that narrates their journey and the significance of their zine. To enhance the storytelling experience, students will also develop a class mural inspired by their zines and organize a mixed-media installation, pairing each zine with a small sculptural element or personal item that represents their cultural narrative. Finally, students will compile a booklet of personal reflections, offering insights and thematic exploration that accompanies the zine exhibition, providing context for viewers.

Launch

Kick off the week with 'Zine Imprint Day', where students create initial ink prints of symbols, words, or images that represent core elements of their identity, using techniques inspired by Carlos Villa. As each student shares their prints, they explain their choices, igniting conversations about the diversity within the class. This hands-on activity not only familiarizes students with the artistic process but also sets an inclusive tone by highlighting the unique backgrounds and perspectives each student brings to the project.

Exhibition

Host an 'Identity Gala Night' in the school auditorium where students showcase their zines through interactive board displays alongside short skits inspired by their creations. Parents, caregivers, and community members are invited to explore these exhibits and engage with students about their narratives. This celebratory event will feature a collaborative mural as a backdrop, weaving individual zine themes into a unified visual story, emphasizing the diversity and interconnectedness of student identities.
