Purpose

The purpose of this learning experience is to immerse middle school students in the dynamic study of seafloor spreading, enhancing their understanding of geological phenomena and their effects on Earth's landscape and ecosystems. By creating hands-on models and participating in collaborative projects, students will explore the processes and impacts of tectonic plate movements, fostering a deeper comprehension of plate tectonics and marine biodiversity. The experience aims to equip students with the skills to analyze geological data, participate in scientific discussions, and effectively communicate their findings, preparing them for future scientific inquiries and real-world environmental challenges.

Learning goals

Students will gain an understanding of seafloor spreading and its role in geological activity, along with its impact on marine ecosystems and biodiversity. They will build skills in data analysis and interpretation to draw connections between geological processes and global geography. Through creative storytelling and collaborative projects, students will develop competencies in collaboration, critical thinking, and scientific communication. The hands-on activities and interactive simulations aim to enhance students' ability to predict future geological events using evidence-based reasoning.

Products

Students will create a dynamic board game that illustrates geological processes at divergent boundaries, allowing guests to engage and learn about seafloor spreading during the 'Seismology Symposium.' They will develop a series of infographics that visually detail the global impacts of seafloor spreading, accessible to visitors at the virtual gallery exhibit. Students will take on roles as reporters in a live-action scenario, offering news updates from different geological eras to showcase their knowledge during an open house event.

Launch

Kick off the project with "Seafloor Geek Out!" by engaging students in an exhilarating ocean exploration virtual reality simulation. As they descend into a vividly immersive seafloor spreading environment, students will observe the dynamic interactions of tectonic plates and newly formed ocean basins. This engaging experience will catalyze curiosity and spark inquiries that will drive their projects, aligning with the essential questions and core content for deeper understanding.

Exhibition

Students will host a 'Science in Motion' open house where they display their seafloor spreading models, animations, and presentations. This interactive exhibit allows family, peers, and teachers to explore and engage with the projects, fostering an engaging learning environment. Participants can also experience a virtual gallery exhibit featuring digital storyboards and animations, showcasing the creativity and depth of student knowledge. Additionally, organizing a 'Seismology Symposium' enables students to present their projects and discuss potential geological impacts with visiting experts, enhancing real-world connections and understanding.
