Students rotate through eggs, seedlings, larvae, and adult organism specimens or photo cards with magnifiers, trays, rulers or linking cubes, and picture-word labels. In pairs, they sketch one organism, name visible parts, compare size or shape, and sort picture cards into plant, animal, and not sure categories before building a class graph. The teacher introduces the essential question and guides a brief talk about what seems to stay the same and what changes over time.

# What teachers do
1 [Whole group] Gather in a circle. Look at the posted question, “How do living things grow and change over time?” and echo it with hand motions for grow (hands up) and change (turn around). The teacher shows the tools and models how to look closely, point to parts, and say, “I notice…” and “I wonder…”. (5 min)
2 [Partners] Move to the first station with a quiet tiptoe transition. You will use a magnifier to look closely at eggs, seedlings, larvae, or adult organism specimens or photo cards and name visible parts with picture-word labels such as leaf, root, shell, wing, or body. (8 min)
3 [Partners] At the station, sketch one living thing on a recording page or clipboard sheet. Add at least one label and use linking cubes or a ruler to show if it looks longer, shorter, bigger, or smaller than another item at the station. (7 min)
4 [Whole group movement break] Stand up and act out a quick change path: curl small like an egg, stretch like a seedling, wiggle like a larva, and stand tall like an adult. Then listen for the next station signal. (3 min)
5 [Partners] Rotate to a sorting table. Sort picture cards into plant, animal, and not sure, then place one card choice on the class graph and tell your partner why you put it there using the words “I see…” or “I think…”. (8 min)
6 [Whole group] Come back to the meeting space. Look at the class graph and talk about patterns: what stayed the same, what changed, and which cards were hard to sort. The teacher records student questions, including “What do plants need to grow?” and “How do animals grow?”. (7 min)
7 [Independent then partner share] Make a fast first model that shows how one living thing changes over time using a quick drawing with arrows or boxes. Turn and talk to share one thing you noticed and one thing you wonder. (5 min)
8 [Whole group close] Hold up your sketch like a scientist. Share a few examples, then place your page in the class project folder or take a photo/voice note for the class record before cleaning up tools. (2 min)
Preparation (10 items)
  • Set up 4 observation stations with real specimens when possible or clear photo cards for eggs, seedlings, larvae, and adult organisms on trays.
  • Place one magnifier, one simple ruler or cup of linking cubes, and one set of picture-word labels at each station.
  • Prepare partner recording sheets with space for a sketch, one or two labels, and a simple bigger/smaller comparison box.
  • Create a large visual anchor chart with the driving question and sentence stems: “I notice…,” “I wonder…,” “It has…,” and “It changed by…”.
  • Prepare sorting cards that include clear plant examples, animal examples, and a few tricky examples for the “not sure” category.
  • Make a class graph with three columns labeled plant, animal, and not sure, using pictures with words for accessibility.
  • Post or prepare gesture cues for grow, change, same, different, plant, and animal to support oral language.
  • Plan partner assignments ahead of time, including strategic pairing for language support, fine motor support, and turn-taking.
  • Prepare a quick model example that shows a simple first draft life cycle drawing without giving away all answers.
  • Set out crayons, pencils, clipboards, cleaning wipes, and a basket or digital device for collecting student pages or short voice notes.
Student-facing instructions
Today you will be a change detective. You will look closely at living things or pictures of living things with a magnifier, talk with a partner, and notice parts you can see. You will use trays, cards, picture-word labels, a ruler or linking cubes, and a drawing sheet. First, you will look closely and say what you notice. Next, you will draw one organism and label a part you can see. Then you will sort cards into plant, animal, or not sure and help add to the class graph. Last, you will make a fast first model to show how one living thing changes over time. Your goal is to use evidence from what you see, share your ideas with your partner, and ask at least one question you want to study next.
