Purpose

The purpose of this project is to engage middle school students in a creative exploration of Earth's geological history by designing board games that effectively model the impact of geoscientific processes. As students collaborate in their teams, they will deepen their understanding of Earth's evolution while developing essential skills in problem-solving, communication, and conflict resolution. The project aims to foster a hands-on, interactive learning environment where students can showcase their creativity and scientific knowledge through game creation and exhibition.

Learning goals

Students will collaboratively design and play board games that creatively represent Earth's geological history, engaging with both small and large-scale geoscientific processes. They will develop critical thinking skills by investigating and recording key geological events using digital research tools and materials to construct accurate game elements. By sharing insights during feedback circles and exhibition events, students enhance their communication skills and deepen their understanding of how geological events shape Earth's past and future. Through reflection journals and peer feedback, learners will assess their growth in collaboration, problem-solving, and effective communication within geosciences.

Competencies
  • Collaboration - Students co-design projects with peers, exercise shared-decision making, strengthen relational agency, resolve conflict, and assume leadership roles.
  • Critical Thinking & Problem Solving - Students consider a variety of innovative approaches to address and understand complex questions that are authentic and important to their communities.
  • Effective Communication - Students practice listening to understand, communicating with empathy, and share their learning through exhibiting, presenting and reflecting on their work.

Products

Students will collaboratively design board games that creatively represent Earth's geological history, focusing on the mechanics and processes behind significant geological events. These games will be interactive, featuring crafted components such as cards, tokens, and boards made from various materials that symbolize Earth's features and transformations. The project culminates in a group-created exhibition booth that blends digital screens with physical models, providing viewers a comprehensive and engaging exploration of geoscientific concepts.

Launch

Kick off the learning experience with an exciting 'Timeline Trek' session where students collaboratively construct a giant timeline map, illustrating key geological events with visual and physical materials. This activity will ignite curiosity and inspiration for their upcoming board game project by immersing them in Earth's rich history. As students piece together the timeline, they will begin to conceptualize how to creatively represent these events and processes in their game designs.

Exhibition

Organize a dynamic 'Geology Gala' where students set up engaging booths showcasing their board games crafted to highlight Earth's geological events. Guests, including other classes, teachers, and families, can engage with the games to delve into Earth's history through interactive play. Students will guide visitors through their creations, sharing insights on geological processes represented, fostering a deeper understanding of Earth's evolution.
