Purpose

This project empowers middle school students to explore and express cultural narratives through the creation of 3D paper sculptures inspired by Charles McGee and African-American art. Over the course of a week, students will engage in hands-on learning, fostering critical thinking, collaboration, and effective communication as they apply artistic techniques to tell compelling stories. Through this immersive experience, students will develop a deeper understanding of cultural history, abstraction in art, and their own identity, culminating in a meaningful community exhibition of their work.

Learning goals

Students will explore and create 3D paper sculptures reflecting African-American culture and history, honing their critical thinking and artistic skills. They'll gain collaboration and communication expertise by co-designing projects and engaging in peer critiques. Through consistent reflection, students will deepen their understanding of cultural narratives and develop the ability to articulate their insights during exhibitions and discussions.
Competencies
  • Critical Thinking & Problem Solving - Students consider a variety of innovative approaches to address and understand complex questions that are authentic and important to their communities.
  • Collaboration - Students co-design projects with peers, exercise shared-decision making, strengthen relational agency, resolve conflict, and assume leadership roles.
  • Effective Communication - Students practice listening to understand, communicating with empathy, and share their learning through exhibiting, presenting and reflecting on their work.
  • Academic Mindset - Students establish a sense of place, identity, and belonging to increase self-efficacy while engaging in critical reflection and action.
  • Content Expertise - Students develop key competencies, skills, and dispositions with ample opportunities to apply knowledge and engage in work that matters to them.

Products

Students will create intricate, one-of-a-kind paper sculptures, inspired by African-American art and culture, to showcase at school and community exhibitions. These sculptures will serve as a medium for students to express cultural narratives using patterns and symmetry. As part of the project, students will also collaboratively produce short videos, highlighting the connection between their sculptures and African-American historical narratives. Additionally, students will develop and present a comparative analysis essay, reflecting on their work and its alignment with Charles McGee's themes. These elements aim to blend artistic exploration with cultural insight, fostering a comprehensive learning experience.

Launch

Kick-off the learning experience with a lively 'Design Delve Challenge,' where students create mini-sculptures drawing inspiration from celebrated African-American artists. This initial activity, coupled with a 'Cultural Inspiration Fair,' energizes students by immersing them in diverse African and African-American art forms, setting the stage for a week of creative exploration and cultural expression. Engage students further with a 'Paper Power Workshop,' equipping them with essential sculpting techniques inspired by Charles McGee, fostering excitement and anticipation for the detailed work ahead.

Exhibition

Students will showcase their creations at the 'Culture in Motion' sculpture parade through the school, engaging with peers, teachers, and families who walk the parade route. They will present their artworks and share personal reflections on their learning journey with handheld exhibits. Additionally, an 'Abstract Expressions' open gallery event will be hosted at a local community center, highlighting the students' sculptures. This event will include live student interviews where they discuss the inspirations behind their works and the roles of abstraction and cultural history in their artistic expressions.
