Purpose

This project aims to immerse middle school students in the vibrant artistic world of Alma Thomas while linking her work to broader themes in black history. It provides a platform for students to creatively explore and express their understanding of complex social and cultural narratives. By translating emotions into patterns and colors, students will engage in hands-on learning that fosters critical thinking, effective communication, and an academic mindset, while celebrating artistry and legacy.

Learning goals

Through this project, students will gain an understanding of Alma Thomas's life, artistic techniques, and contributions to modern art and black history. They will develop critical thinking skills by exploring themes in her work and learning how to incorporate similar styles and stories into their own artwork. Students will enhance their communication abilities by sharing their creative process and reflections in both written and verbal formats. By engaging with the themes in Alma Thomas's paintings, students will foster a deeper appreciation for color and texture's role in emotional expression, while building a sense of personal identity and community connection.

Competencies
  • Critical Thinking & Problem Solving - Students consider a variety of innovative approaches to address and understand complex questions that are authentic and important to their communities.
  • Effective Communication - Students practice listening to understand, communicating with empathy, and share their learning through exhibiting, presenting and reflecting on their work.
  • Academic Mindset - Students establish a sense of place, identity, and belonging to increase self-efficacy while engaging in critical reflection and action.

Products

Students will develop individual paintings inspired by Alma Thomas's style, showcasing their interpretations of themes and emotional impacts through vibrant colors and textures. Alongside their art pieces, students will write narratives that explore their connection to Alma Thomas's work, culminating in a 'Living Colors Gallery' event where both artwork and narratives are displayed for community viewing. Additionally, students will collaborate on a school-wide mural that combines elements from their individual creations, representing a collective artistic homage to Alma Thomas, prominently displayed for all to appreciate.

Launch

Begin the project with a 'Colorful Connections Kickoff,' where students collaboratively paint a large canvas using vibrant colors, exploring the themes and stories they want to express throughout the project. Encourage lively discussions about the emotional impact of color and texture. Alternatively, have students embark on an 'Alma Adventure Quest' scavenger hunt around the school, solving clues related to Alma Thomas's works, to spark curiosity about her artistic techniques and legacy.

Exhibition

Host an 'Alma's Palette Parade' event, where students collaborate to create a large mural inspired by Alma Thomas. Display the mural in a prominent school area for ongoing appreciation, and invite local artists to a ribbon-cutting ceremony, where they can discuss color and texture's emotional impact with students. Additionally, organize a 'Textures of History' night where students display their paintings, perform dramatic readings, or create short skits about Alma Thomas's life and impact on black history, inviting friends, family, and peers for an engaging evening of visual and performing arts.
