Purpose

This project immerses middle school students in the historical narratives of military veterans, using art as a medium to explore and communicate their stories. Students will engage with real-world experiences through veteran interviews, historical research, and artistic creation, facilitating a deeper understanding of soldiers' roles and the impact of military conflicts. Through collaborative design and critical reflection, they will create expressive stained glass silhouettes that honor veterans' histories and contribute to preserving these stories for future generations. This hands-on project not only enhances students' communication and problem-solving skills but also strengthens community connections by sparking conversations between students, veterans, and local residents.

Learning goals

Students will gain an understanding of the evolution of a soldier's role across major historical conflicts and how these roles are represented in visual art. They will develop effective communication skills through veteran interviews and presenting their work, focusing on empathy and active listening. Through collaboration and peer feedback, students will engage in critical thinking, refining their project to depict historically and emotionally accurate narratives. This project aims to foster a deeper appreciation for veterans' stories, enhancing students' abilities to express these stories through artistic mediums while reflecting on the broader significance of their work.

Competencies
  • Effective Communication - Students practice listening to understand, communicating with empathy, and share their learning through exhibiting, presenting and reflecting on their work.
  • Critical Thinking & Problem Solving - Students consider a variety of innovative approaches to address and understand complex questions that are authentic and important to their communities.
  • Collaboration - Students co-design projects with peers, exercise shared-decision making, strengthen relational agency, resolve conflict, and assume leadership roles.

Products

Throughout the project, students will collaboratively create a set of stained glass silhouette art pieces that depict historical scenes and figures, reflecting their research and veterans' stories. These artworks will culminate in a commemorative booklet integrating students’ art and veterans' insights. Additionally, students will develop personal reflection journals detailing their project journey, learnings, and the impact of their interactions with veterans and community partners, which will serve as a record of their critical thinking and creative process.

Launch

Initiate the project with a 'Veteran Stories Campfire Circle,' where students listen to live or recorded stories from veterans. This setting fosters direct connections and understanding between students and the veteran community, inspiring empathy and ideas for their stained glass narratives. Follow this session with dialogue about soldiers' evolving roles and responsibilities, setting a solid foundation for students' research and creative process.

Exhibition

Students will organize a 'Gallery of Honor' exhibit at a local community center, serving as docents to guide visitors through their stained glass art pieces. Each student will engage with visitors by explaining the historical context and personal reflections behind their work. In addition to the static display, a 'Pathway of Memories' evening walking tour on the school grounds will highlight the illuminated art, accompanied by veterans and community members sharing stories to deepen the experience.
