Purpose

The purpose of this learning experience is to immerse middle school students in a project that integrates genetic science with creative pet design, enhancing their critical thinking, communication, and collaboration skills. Through hands-on activities and diverse assessments, students explore genetic variation, decode genetic traits, and design an ideal pet that fits various lifestyle needs. This project encourages deep content engagement, empowers students to apply their understanding in meaningful ways, and fosters a community of learners who reflect on and refine their ideas.

Learning goals

Students will grasp the principles of Mendelian genetics by using Punnett squares to predict the outcomes of genetic crosses, enhancing their understanding of genetic variation. They'll develop competencies in identifying and analyzing the roles of dominant and recessive genes in shaping traits, applying this to their pet designs. By crafting genetic family trees, students will learn to trace hereditary patterns, gaining insight into how traits are inherited across generations. Through collaboration and communication exercises, they will refine their skills in working effectively with peers, articulating their ideas, and responding constructively to feedback.

Competencies
  • Critical Thinking & Problem Solving - Students consider a variety of innovative approaches to address and understand complex questions that are authentic and important to their communities.
  • Effective Communication - Students practice listening to understand, communicating with empathy, and share their learning through exhibiting, presenting and reflecting on their work.
  • Collaboration - Students co-design projects with peers, exercise shared-decision making, strengthen relational agency, resolve conflict, and assume leadership roles.
  • Content Expertise - Students develop key competencies, skills, and dispositions with ample opportunities to apply knowledge and engage in work that matters to them.

Products

Throughout the project, students will design a fictional perfect pet using visual art with a genetic family tree to illustrate its lineage. They will craft a digital presentation detailing the genetic journey from concept to creation, culminating in a multimedia showcase event. Additionally, students will participate in an interactive pet fair, presenting their pet models and explaining the genetic science behind each trait. A creative storytelling component allows students to narrate their perfect pet's life, surrounded by genetic and behavioral details, while a role-playing debate offers a platform to defend their pet's traits using scientific understanding.

Launch

Engage students in a lively ‘Traits Triathlon’ to kickstart the project, where they participate in hands-on activities mimicking various pet behaviors and traits. Set up different stations that challenge them to complete tasks highlighting agility, sensory perception, and problem-solving abilities, infusing elements from popular pets' characteristics. Encourage students to discuss how genetics might influence these traits, setting a collaborative and creative tone for the project's exploration of designing their perfect pet.

Exhibition

Students will proudly showcase their creations during a vibrant 'Perfect Pet Parade,' inviting family, friends, and community members. Each student will introduce their carefully crafted pet, highlighting distinctive traits and genetic calculations. This exhibition serves as a celebration of their learning journey, facilitating lively discussions with attendees on the hypothetical breed's genetic potential and lifestyle compatibility, ensuring a shared understanding and appreciation for the depth of student exploration.
