Purpose

Students will engage in a project-based learning experience by creating a simple marketplace within their classroom or community. They will simulate roles such as buyers, sellers, and producers, and explore the dynamics of supply and demand through interactive activities. This project will illuminate the impact of individual choices on a free market economy and its effects on community well-being, fostering a deeper understanding of economic principles through real-world application.

Learning goals

Students will explore the dynamics of a free market economy by participating in a classroom marketplace simulation. They will take on different roles such as business owners, consumers, and government officials to make individual choices about goods and services. Through this experience, they will investigate the effects of their choices on supply and demand and understand the impact on community well-being. Students at all grade levels will develop skills in decision-making, collaboration, and critical thinking, while designing strategies to balance economic success with social responsibility.

Products

Students will form teams to create a mini marketplace within the classroom, where each team designs and produces a unique product or service to be traded or sold to their peers. Throughout the project, students will document their decision-making processes and market strategies in a digital portfolio. At the end of the four-week period, teams will present their products and reflect on their understanding of supply and demand, as well as the impact of their choices on the classroom community.

Launch

Students embark on a marketplace simulation where they create and trade simple goods or services within mini-market stalls they design. Each stall, representing a unique "business," allows students to make choices about pricing and resource allocation. They experience firsthand how their decisions impact their "customers" and the availability of goods in the market, laying the foundation for understanding supply, demand, and community well-being.

Exhibition

Students will organize a "Market Day" event where they set up booths to sell goods or services they have created. They will develop marketing strategies, set pricing, and evaluate supply and demand based on their peers' and visitors' interactions. By simulating a marketplace, students can demonstrate their understanding of how individual choices influence the market and broader community wellbeing. Invite parents, teachers, and community members to engage with the students' markets, offering a real-world audience for their learning outcomes.
