The Challenge

The core challenge in music production involves integrating diverse cultural sounds and adapting to rapid technological advancements, which can shape and reflect societal evolution and emotions. Navigating the complexities of collaboration and experimentation while maintaining personal style poses a significant barrier to creating impactful, original compositions.

Challenge Question

How can you create a unique musical composition that expresses your personal story while collaborating with others and utilizing available technology?

Standards
  • [Massachusetts] ASE.M.Cr.01 - Generate and conceptualize artistic ideas and work. Generate instrumental or vocal interpretations that integrate aesthetic principles with personal style.
  • [Massachusetts] P.M.Co.10 - Synthesize and relate knowledge and personal experiences to make art. Describe how music influences one’s approach to other academic disciplines (e.g., how the physics of sound influences how one makes music).
  • [Massachusetts] ASE.M.Cr.03 - Refine and complete artistic work. Identify musical challenges and reflect upon the advantages and disadvantages of different solutions (e.g., in playing an instrument, the ideal hand position for a difficult phrase; in singing, breath spacing in a long passage).
  • [Massachusetts] ASE.M.Cr.02 - Organize and develop artistic ideas and work. Arrange pieces for multiple instruments or voices in an array of genres and styles.
  • [Massachusetts] AG.M.P.05 - Develop and refine artistic techniques and work for presentation. Lead the production and sharing of an original composition (e.g., a student leads a concert in which her work is performed).

Learning Partners and Clients

Partner with local music academies or professional musicians to give students insights into real-world music production. Reach out to a nearby radio station or multimedia studio that can demonstrate how music is created and shared with audiences. Collaborate with cultural organizations to explore how music production reflects cultural diversity and history. Invite community members who have pursued musical careers to share their experiences and guidance. These partnerships can provide hands-on learning opportunities and authentic feedback on student projects.
