Students experience short live or recorded excerpts from three local musicians representing different genres. After each excerpt, students respond through quick sketches (K–5) or written/audio notes (6–12) identifying mood, cultural influences, and possible community messages. The class discusses how music can influence emotions, school culture, and social change.

#	What teachers do
1	Welcome and Introduction: Gather students and introduce the session. Explain the purpose and what they will be doing today. (10 min)
2	Music Listening: Play short excerpts from local musicians representing different genres. Ensure students are seated comfortably and focused. (10 min)
3	Response Sketches/Writing: Kindergarten to 5th grade draw quick sketches; 6th to 12th grade write or record audio notes about emotions and messages conveyed by the music. Provide necessary tools (paper, pencils, devices). (10 min)
4	Group Sharing: In small groups, students share their thoughts and sketches/writings with each other, discussing cultural influences, moods, and messages they perceive. Encourage respectful listening and sharing. (10 min)
5	Class Discussion: Facilitate a class discussion on how the music excerpts can influence emotions, school culture, and social change. Encourage students to think about the societal impacts they identified in the music. (5 min)

Preparation (3 items)

Set up audio equipment and arrange seating to ensure all students can hear the music excerpts clearly.
Prepare physical materials like paper and pencils for sketches (K-5) and digital devices for older students to take notes or record audio.
Coordinate with local musicians to ensure the music excerpts are ready for playback and represent diverse genres.

Student-facing instructions

Your task is to listen carefully to music excerpts from local musicians. Use the materials provided to respond: draw a sketch if you're in K-5 or write/record your thoughts if you're in grades 6-12. Share with your group, then join the class discussion about the influences and impacts of the music.

Success criteria

You have successfully completed the activity when you have listened to the music, created a sketch or note, shared your insights with your peers, and participated in the class discussion. You can visually show or verbally express what you learned from the music.

Facilitator notes

Encourage active listening by modeling engagement during music playback. Use a timer to keep transitions smooth. For young learners, offer prompts like 'What colors do you think of when you hear this music?' For older students, guide them to consider cultural and social messages. Address any technology issues promptly to ensure focus remains on the music and responses. Keep an eye on inclusion, ensuring all students feel comfortable to share their responses.
