Purpose

This two-week project engages first-grade students in a hands-on learning journey focused on improving their neighborhood through acts of kindness. Students will harness their creativity and curiosity to identify community needs, collaborate on solutions, and practice empathy through daily actions. By participating in this project, students will develop critical thinking, effective communication, and collaboration skills while fostering a sense of belonging and purpose. The culminating events, including community presentations and celebrations, provide opportunities for students to exhibit their growth and reflect on the impact of their contributions.

Learning goals

The learning goals for this project include developing observation skills by identifying community needs and cultivating creativity through brainstorming solutions. Students will practice effective communication and empathy during their Kindness Crafting Workshop, learn the basics of plant care by engaging in hands-on gardening, and strengthen collaboration skills through shared decision-making in group projects. Additionally, they aim to foster an academic mindset by reflecting on their contributions to the community and celebrate their achievements with peers and families during the Growth Garden Fair and Community Celebration Day.

Competencies
  • Critical Thinking & Problem Solving - Students consider a variety of innovative approaches to address and understand complex questions that are authentic and important to their communities.
  • Collaboration - Students co-design projects with peers, exercise shared-decision making, strengthen relational agency, resolve conflict, and assume leadership roles.
  • Effective Communication - Students practice listening to understand, communicating with empathy, and share their learning through exhibiting, presenting and reflecting on their work.
  • Content Expertise - Students develop key competencies, skills, and dispositions with ample opportunities to apply knowledge and engage in work that matters to them.
  • Academic Mindset - Students establish a sense of place, identity, and belonging to increase self-efficacy while engaging in critical reflection and action.

Products

During this learning experience, students will create personalized cards and small gifts to share with community members, fostering connection and kindness. They will contribute to a class scrapbook that captures their daily activities and reflections, culminating in a comprehensive narrative of their journey. Additionally, students will craft plant pots as part of their 'Growth Garden Fair', each representing lessons learned about caring for both plants and their community. By leading a cleanup project at a local playground, students will also produce vibrant decorations displaying their kindness efforts, adding beauty and a tangible sense of accomplishment to their community space.

Launch

To kick off the project, host a "Hands-On Kindness Kickoff" where students brainstorm and design kindness cards and small gifts to distribute throughout their neighborhood over the two-week period. This interactive event encourages students to think creatively and collaboratively about how small acts can contribute to community well-being and builds excitement for the journey ahead.

Exhibition

The exhibition will feature a 'Growth Garden Fair' where students proudly present their planted seeds, sharing insights into the growth process and creating plant pots as meaningful souvenirs. Families and community members will join the 'Community Celebration Day,' enjoying an immersive experience with interactive art, music, and storytelling stations that vividly portray the students' kindness journey. During the event, students will use their scrapbook to narrate their journey and engage visitors in appreciating the impact of small actions in community enhancement.
