Empathize
Students will investigate how real players experience game instructions by analyzing mentor rulebooks, interviewing community partners at the library, and documenting user needs. They will practice listening with empathy, identifying patterns in clear directions, and gathering evidence to inform their own future game designs.
Days 1 - 3
No activities have been added to this phase yet.
Define
Students will synthesize insights from their library game research to clearly define the instruction-writing problem they want to solve. They will analyze patterns in confusing rules, create user personas, and craft a focused problem statement that guides the design of their own game instructions.
Days 4 - 6
No activities have been added to this phase yet.
Ideate
Students will generate a wide range of possible game concepts and rule structures, apply what they learned about clear instructions, and select a user-centered direction for their team game. They will brainstorm, sketch, draft early rule sequences, give and receive peer feedback, and justify design choices before moving into prototyping.
Days 7 - 10
No activities have been added to this phase yet.
Prototype
Students will build and refine a playable prototype of their original board game, draft complete rulebooks, conduct peer usability testing, and revise both their game materials and instructions based on structured feedback before moving to community testing.
Days 11 - 15
No activities have been added to this phase yet.
Test/Present
Students will conduct final user testing with authentic audiences, revise their game instructions based on real feedback, and present their completed board games and 3D-printed pieces at a community game night exhibition, demonstrating how clarity and detail improve usability.
