Purpose

The purpose of this project is to engage elementary students in creating a board game, emphasizing the skill of writing clear and detailed instructions. Through the design and play process, students will deepen their understanding of effective communication and collaboration. They will practice critical thinking and problem-solving by analyzing existing game instructions and applying feedback to refine their own. By showcasing their games at a community event, students will connect with real-world audiences, fostering a sense of accomplishment and relevance in their learning.

Learning goals

Students will engage in developing their critical thinking and problem-solving skills by designing a game with clear and detailed instructions. They will enhance their collaboration by working in teams and receiving feedback from classmates and community partners during a game night event. The learning goals also include improving effective communication through presenting their designs and instructions and participating in peer review sessions. Students will cultivate self-directed learning through the iterative process of reflecting on feedback to refine their writing. Achieving the project will meet Common Core standards by encouraging students to explore "how-to" books and apply their findings to create comprehensive game instructions.

Standards
  • [Common Core] CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.1.7 - Participate in shared research and writing projects (e.g., explore a number of "how-to" books on a given topic and use them to write a sequence of instructions).
Competencies
  • Effective Communication - Students practice listening to understand, communicating with empathy, and share their learning through exhibiting, presenting and reflecting on their work.
  • Self Directed Learning - Students use teacher and peer feedback and self-reflection to monitor and direct their own learning while building self knowledge both in and out of the classroom.
  • Collaboration - Students co-design projects with peers, exercise shared-decision making, strengthen relational agency, resolve conflict, and assume leadership roles.
  • Critical Thinking & Problem Solving - Students consider a variety of innovative approaches to address and understand complex questions that are authentic and important to their communities.

Products

Students will create an original tabletop game, complete with detailed, written instructions and 3D-printed game pieces. Throughout the project, they will refine their directions based on peer and community feedback, emphasizing clarity and effectiveness. By the end of the project, each student's completed game will be featured at a community game night event, showcasing their learning and creativity to local stakeholders.

Launch

Kick off the project with a visit to the nearby library for an engaging board game session. Students will explore a variety of games, focusing on how their instructions are written and how they impact gameplay. This hands-on experience will spark curiosity and set the stage for students to think critically about what makes clear and effective instructions. After the session, students will brainstorm ideas for their own game concepts and begin drafting preliminary instructions, integrating initial observations from their library experience.

Exhibition

At the culmination of the project, host a community game night where students display and demonstrate their games, complete with their written directions. Invite community members, including library staff and other educators, to engage with the games and provide constructive feedback on the instructions' clarity and usability. Encourage students to articulate their design choices, methods of instruction, and the challenges they faced in creating their games. This event will allow students to practice effective communication and reflect on their learning while receiving input directly from community stakeholders. Ensure all students have an opportunity to present and receive feedback, fostering a supportive environment where their unique contributions are recognized and valued.
