Purpose

This project immerses students in the dynamic world of poetry, enhancing their ability to interpret and analyze across cultural landscapes and complex texts. Through engaging, hands-on experiences, students will elevate their analytical skills and creative expression, culminating in a compelling multimedia presentation that encapsulates their learning journey. The project strengthens capabilities as Creative Contributors, Effective Communicators, and Empowered Learners, fostering academic mastery and inspiring innovative thinking.

Learning goals

Students will analyze complex poetic texts, exploring various literary devices and techniques. They will interpret authors' perspectives and cultural experiences from world literature, enhancing their critical thinking and analytical skills. Through multimedia presentations, students will creatively express their insights by integrating visual art, spoken word, and music, effectively communicating their understanding of themes across different artistic mediums while demonstrating mastery of deeper learning competencies.
Standards
  • [Kentucky] RL.9-10.6 - Analyze a particular author's perspective or cultural experience reflected in a work of literature by drawing on a wide reading of world literature.
  • [Kentucky] RI.9-10.9 - Analyze documents of historical and literary significance, including how they address related themes and concepts.
  • [Kentucky] RL.9-10.7 - Analyze the representation of a subject or a key scene in two different artistic mediums, including what is emphasized or absent in each treatment.
  • [Kentucky] RL.9-10.9 - Analyze how an author draws on and transforms source material in a specific work.
  • [Kentucky] RI.9-10.3 - Analyze how the author unfolds an analysis or series of ideas or events over the course of a text, including the order in which the points are made, how they are introduced and developed and the connections that are drawn between them.
Competencies
  • Creative Contributer - Interprets experiences, imagines and plays with new possibilities with curiosity, and creates approaches that are novel, useful, and valued by the world around them.
  • Effective Communicator - Engages diverse audiences respectfully by exchanging ideas and information responsibly, listening actively, speaking and writing clearly, and using print and digital media appropriately.
  • Empowered Learner - Demonstrates mastery and application of academic competencies. Develops the skills and dispositions to persist through difficulties and plan for a future of self-improvement.

Products

Each student will create an engaging multimedia presentation that includes a detailed analysis of a chosen poem, integrating elements such as visual art, music, and an original spoken-word performance inspired by the poem's themes and techniques. Additionally, students will have the opportunity to present their analyses and interpretations at a community poetry reading event, fostering their skills as effective communicators. These products will exemplify students' ability to creatively contribute original ideas while demonstrating their mastery and application of academic competencies through deep literary analysis.

Launch

The project kicks off with an engaging 'Poetry Escape Room' activity where students work collaboratively to solve puzzles about poetic devices and famous poems, culminating in unlocking and exploring a 'poet's treasure' of classic poetry books. This activity encouraged curiosity, collaboration, and creative engagement, providing students with a foundation to interpret experiences and contribute unique analyses throughout the project. Students actively explore literary elements while developing effective communication skills by articulating their findings and analyses within their group and later sharing these with community partners.

Exhibition

Students will host a "Poetry in Motion" night at the city library where they present their multimedia analyses alongside artistic performances to diverse community members. By including librarians and local poets, students engage respecting diverse perspectives while clearly communicating their insights. The event will showcase student-created visual art, music, and spoken-word inspired by their selected poems, embodying creativity and mastery of poetic analysis. This exhibition celebrates students' novel interpretations and artistic contributions rooted in real-world contexts.

Empathize
Students will launch the poetry analysis project by engaging in a Poetry Escape Room, then begin empathizing with authentic audiences for their future library poetry night. Through guided analysis of poems, adaptations, and historical source texts, students will practice close reading and begin gathering insight into how different readers interpret and experience poetry. They will conduct initial user interviews and create empathy maps to understand how to design meaningful multimedia poetry analyses for a real community audience.
