Purpose

Students will engage in shared research about Kentucky culture and compose insightful letters that include personal stories, effectively bridging cultural differences with their pen pals in Honduras. By exploring connections between Kentucky and Honduran cultures, students will develop empathy and broaden their global perspective. This project emphasizes collaboration, reflection, and thoughtful expression, fostering their development as informed communicators who appreciate diverse viewpoints.

Learning goals

Students will explore Kentucky culture through a "Mystery Box of Kentucky," enhancing their understanding of cultural narratives to share with pen pals. They will refine their ability to articulate thoughts and emotions in writing to foster meaningful exchanges while developing empathy through active listening and responding. Through collaborative activities, students will enhance communication skills and connect their pen pal interactions with broader cultural insights discussed in class, promoting deeper understanding and reflection.

Products

Students will craft personalized cultural letters, combining thoughtfully written correspondence with vibrant illustrations that depict aspects of Kentucky culture, launched through the "Mystery Box of Kentucky" to introduce cultural elements creatively. These letters will foster cross-cultural dialogue and demonstrate their understanding of language conventions, empathy in communication, and cultural inquiry. The final products will be shared during the 'Letters and Learning Showcase,' where students will present selected excerpts and discuss the insights gained through their exchanges with pen pals in Honduras.

Launch

Introduce the project with a "Mystery Box of Kentucky" activity, where students explore various items that celebrate Kentucky culture and traditions. Encourage students to handle objects and share their thoughts and questions, sparking curiosity about cultural exchanges. Use multimedia tools to showcase images and videos that highlight Kentucky's cultural aspects, setting the scene for their pen pal letters to enhance cultural understanding and connection.

Exhibition

Curate a 'Letters and Learning Showcase' where students read selected excerpts from their pen pal letters and reflect on what they've learned about effective communication and cultural understanding. Incorporate interactive stations featuring multimedia presentations using the GSE Kaleidoscope to explore cultural insights from both Kentucky and Honduras. Encourage reflection through journaling and peer discussions, allowing students to share personal growth in understanding different cultures and perspectives.
