Purpose

The purpose of this learning experience is for students to engage in a real-world service project that addresses child hunger within their community. Through hands-on activities and partnerships with local entities, students will develop critical skills such as problem-solving, collaboration, and effective communication. They will utilize their content knowledge to create sustainable solutions and foster partnerships, enriching their understanding of community resources and needs. Through reflection, critique, and exhibition, students will recognize their role in contributing to meaningful change, cultivating a sense of responsibility and initiative to tackle pressing societal issues.

Learning goals

Students will use critical thinking and problem-solving skills to explore innovative approaches to address child hunger. They will collaborate effectively, engaging with peers and community partners to co-design projects and assume leadership roles. Through effective communication, students will present their findings, share experiences during exhibits, and participate in discussions to articulate their understanding and empathy. The project will also enhance content expertise by allowing students to engage with real-world challenges, utilizing technology to connect local resources with families in need.

Competencies
  • Critical Thinking & Problem Solving - Students consider a variety of innovative approaches to address and understand complex questions that are authentic and important to their communities.
  • Collaboration - Students co-design projects with peers, exercise shared-decision making, strengthen relational agency, resolve conflict, and assume leadership roles.
  • Effective Communication - Students practice listening to understand, communicating with empathy, and share their learning through exhibiting, presenting and reflecting on their work.
  • Content Expertise - Students develop key competencies, skills, and dispositions with ample opportunities to apply knowledge and engage in work that matters to them.

Products

During the project, students will create an interactive digital platform that connects local food resources with families in need, utilizing their collaboration and technological skills. Additionally, they will craft a multimedia presentation detailing the impact of their service project, integrating statistics, visuals, and narrative elements collected from community interactions. These products will be showcased at a 'Partnership Showcase & Roundtable,' facilitating meaningful dialogue and insights sharing with community stakeholders.

Launch

To kick off the project, organize a 'Partner in Action Day' where students embark on a field trip to local businesses, schools, and other relevant community organizations. During this visit, students will have the opportunity to observe firsthand how these entities are actively addressing food insecurity. They will engage in documenting their observations through notes and photos, which will serve as foundational insights as they embark on their own service project. This immersive experience will spark curiosity and energetic discussions back in the classroom, setting a dynamic tone for the weeks ahead.

Exhibition

Students will produce a multimedia presentation for a 'Partnership Showcase & Roundtable,' where they exhibit their digital platforms, interactive maps, and findings from their 'Partner in Action Day.' This event will feature insights into their service projects, emphasizing the impact on child hunger solutions and community collaboration. Students will engage in a discussion with community partners, answer audience questions, and seek feedback for ongoing efforts to strengthen local initiatives against food insecurity.
