Purpose

This project is designed to cultivate an engaging literacy culture at our school through the collaborative design of an innovative library space that embodies the diverse interests and values of our community. Students are actively involved in all aspects of library creation, including hands-on design, engaging with community partners, and leading book club facilitation. Through these real-world applications, students will enhance their critical thinking, communication, and problem-solving skills, while nurturing a strong sense of belonging within their educational environment.

Learning goals

The learning goals for this project aim to deepen students' collaboration, critical thinking, and communication skills as they co-design and implement a library space. Students will develop practical skills in design, construction, grant writing, and marketing, while applying their literacy competencies through reading, discussing, and writing literary essays. Additionally, students will engage in self-directed learning by utilizing feedback to reflect and refine their work, strengthening their academic mindset and sense of belonging within the community. This project emphasizes real-world application and community involvement to support diverse literacy interests and values.

Competencies
  • Collaboration - Students co-design projects with peers, exercise shared-decision making, strengthen relational agency, resolve conflict, and assume leadership roles.
  • Critical Thinking & Problem Solving - Students consider a variety of innovative approaches to address and understand complex questions that are authentic and important to their communities.
  • Effective Communication - Students practice listening to understand, communicating with empathy, and share their learning through exhibiting, presenting and reflecting on their work.
  • Content Expertise - Students develop key competencies, skills, and dispositions with ample opportunities to apply knowledge and engage in work that matters to them.
  • Self Directed Learning - Students use teacher and peer feedback and self-reflection to monitor and direct their own learning while building self knowledge both in and out of the classroom.
  • Academic Mindset - Students establish a sense of place, identity, and belonging to increase self-efficacy while engaging in critical reflection and action.

Products

Throughout the project, students will collaboratively design and construct a functional library space in the 11th grade commons. An illustrated blueprint or conceptual image of the library design will visually showcase their creative planning. They will write literary essays, reflecting on their chosen books and preparing insightful analysis for their community-based book club discussions. The book club exhibition will serve as a platform for students to showcase their interpersonal and communication skills, while the marketing campaign executed by one of the student groups will actively engage community members and partners. The application of grant writing skills will directly result in securing funds and resources to support the library's development, aligning with their peers' interests and needs.

Launch

To kick off the project, students can visit the Central Library in Downtown San Diego for a guided tour showcasing various library spaces. They will participate in a hands-on workshop led by library staff, focusing on library design, community interaction, and book selection strategies. This immersive experience will help spark inspiration and provide real-world insights as students begin the journey of designing their own library space, while allowing them to observe how libraries engage diverse community groups effectively. Include vibrant imagery depicting library spaces, community interactions, and book selections during the workshop to enhance visual engagement and inspiration.

Exhibition

To culminate the project, the Book Club Exhibition will be hosted in the newly designed library space within the 11th grade Commons, inviting parents, local businesses, politicians, and educational partners. This event will feature interactive book discussions led by students, showcasing their chosen texts and the literary essays they've crafted. An image capturing the vibrant library space and students engaging in discussions will enhance the promotional materials and marketing campaign executed by the Community Outreach and Event Planning team to ensure robust attendance. The exhibition will also highlight the collaborative efforts of the Design/Build Team and Grant Writing Team, displaying the transformed library space and celebrating the funds acquired for book purchases. Through this exhibition, students will share their learning journey and the effective communication skills they've honed throughout the project.
