Purpose

Through this project, students will explore storytelling through the lens of art, developing their ability to communicate personal narratives visually and verbally. By creating their own art pieces and accompanying persuasive essays, they will foster a deeper understanding of artistic expression while practicing critical thinking. Engaging with community partners and participating in art exhibitions will strengthen their connection to the local arts community, allowing them to reflect on their learning journey collaboratively and independently.

Learning goals

Through this project, students will explore the concepts of art including line, shape, medium, and color while developing persuasive writing skills. They will learn to effectively communicate their understanding and interpretations of art and biographies through creating and presenting their own art piece. Students will engage in self-directed learning by reflecting on feedback, revising their artwork, and writing persuasive essays that tell a story about their chosen artist or art piece. Collaborating with community partners like a local art gallery, students will critically evaluate different artistic approaches and deepen their appreciation for diverse narratives. Ultimately, the project aims to foster a sense of identity and belonging through the art-making process.

Competencies
  • Effective Communication - Students practice listening to understand, communicating with empathy, and share their learning through exhibiting, presenting and reflecting on their work.
  • Critical Thinking & Problem Solving - Students consider a variety of innovative approaches to address and understand complex questions that are authentic and important to their communities.
  • Content Expertise - Students develop key competencies, skills, and dispositions with ample opportunities to apply knowledge and engage in work that matters to them.
  • Self Directed Learning - Students use teacher and peer feedback and self-reflection to monitor and direct their own learning while building self knowledge both in and out of the classroom.
  • Academic Mindset - Students establish a sense of place, identity, and belonging to increase self-efficacy while engaging in critical reflection and action.

Products

Throughout the project, students will explore various artist styles and create their own art pieces, using concepts such as line, shape, medium, and color. Each student's final art piece will visually tell their personal story, demonstrating their understanding of these art elements and how they can communicate emotion and narrative. In addition to creating art, students will write a persuasive essay discussing their favorite art piece or artist style, reflecting on their journey and process. This work will be showcased in an exhibition setting, akin to an art gallery, where students present and share their stories through their creations.

Launch

Begin the project by visiting the school's mural and discussing its themes, colors, and the stories it portrays. Engage students in a conversation about how this art piece communicates the culture and values of the school community. Prompt them to brainstorm ways they can share their own stories and identity through art, setting the stage for the essential question they will explore throughout the project.

Exhibition

Conduct an art gallery exhibition where students display their artwork created in the styles studied during the project, alongside a persuasive essay advocating for their chosen piece or artist style. Invite local community members and a partner from the local art gallery to attend and engage with students as they present their stories and insights through their art and writing. Incorporate interactive elements such as a feedback station where guests can leave positive comments, encouraging students to reflect on their creative journey and communication skills.
