Purpose

This project offers a creative exploration of Huichol culture through the art of yarn painting, aiming to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month while fostering deeper cultural understanding. Students will engage in hands-on creation, blending art with cultural narratives to create personal yarn landscapes inspired by Huichol traditions. By examining the symbolic meanings and techniques of Huichol art, students will develop technical skills and enhance their critical thinking, empathy, and collaborative abilities, culminating in a dynamic exhibition showcasing their interpretations.

Learning goals

Students will engage deeply with the cultural traditions of Huichol art, gaining insights into Mexican heritage and history through hands-on creation and research. They will develop effective communication skills by presenting their artistic processes and cultural reflections. By collaborating in small teams, they will enhance their ability to co-design, navigate shared decision-making, and exercise critical thinking in addressing complex cultural narratives. Through reflection and critique, students will build empathy and understanding, both for Huichol traditions and their classmates, fostering a respectful and diverse learning environment.

Competencies
  • Effective Communication - Students practice listening to understand, communicating with empathy, and share their learning through exhibiting, presenting and reflecting on their work.
  • Critical Thinking & Problem Solving - Students consider a variety of innovative approaches to address and understand complex questions that are authentic and important to their communities.
  • Collaboration - Students co-design projects with peers, exercise shared-decision making, strengthen relational agency, resolve conflict, and assume leadership roles.

Products

Students will collaboratively craft vibrant yarn paintings that showcase landscapes inspired by Huichol art techniques, reflecting their cultural narratives. They will produce multimedia presentations linking their creations to Huichol symbolism and traditions through QR codes for deeper exploration. The project culminates in a 3D installation that transforms the classroom into an immersive Huichol-inspired tapestry, featuring diverse textures and yarn sculptures. Each student will contribute a reflection card and interpretive essay as part of an exhibit, presenting their artistic journey and understanding of Huichol motifs. The interactive yarn art exhibition will serve as a dynamic platform to share and celebrate their creations with the wider school community.

Launch

Initiate the project with a 'Huichol Heritage Film Fest,' screening a captivating documentary on Huichol art and culture. Follow the screening with a guided discussion to prompt students to draw connections between the Huichol traditions and their personal cultural narratives. Encourage students to brainstorm initial ideas for their yarn landscapes, which will incorporate the artistic techniques and cultural elements observed in the film.

Exhibition

Transform the classroom into an Interactive Yarn Art Exhibition featuring a pop-up museum that showcases students' yarn landscape creations. Incorporate reflection cards and recorded video reflections next to each artwork to provide personal insights into the creative process and the exploration of Huichol traditions. Engage visitors further by hosting a cultural trivia section centered on Huichol symbolism and heritage, encouraging active participation and deeper exploration of the exhibited works.
