Purpose

This project invites students to engage deeply with the Russian Revolution, exploring the interplay of social movements and public sentiments. Through immersive experiences and reflective practices, students analyze historical complexities, enhance their critical thinking skills, and draw parallels to contemporary community issues. The hands-on approach ensures all students actively contribute to developing a nuanced understanding of history's impact on societal structures and change.

Learning goals

Students will analyze the role of social movements in the progression and outcomes of the Russian Revolution, cultivating skills in historical inquiry and comprehension. They will develop critical thinking and problem-solving abilities as they engage with virtual reality experiences, debates, and multimedia projects, ultimately demonstrating a nuanced understanding of historical complexity. Through reflective journaling and peer feedback, students will refine their communication skills and deepen their emotional intelligence, linking historical analysis to contemporary social concerns.

Competencies
  • Critical Thinking & Problem Solving - Students consider a variety of innovative approaches to address and understand complex questions that are authentic and important to their communities.

Products

Students will create a multimedia presentation or video documentary showcasing key social movements during the Russian Revolution. This will include student-conducted interviews, primary source analysis, and reflections gathered through their ongoing journaling exercises. The final product should capture both the historical significance and socio-emotional dimensions of the revolution, synthesizing diverse perspectives encountered during debates and critiques.

Launch

Begin the project with an immersive virtual reality experience or video documentary that vividly transports students to historical settings of the Russian Revolution. Encourage them to closely observe and journal their emotional responses and societal observations, fostering deeper connection with the topic. This exercise will set the stage for critical understanding and spark curiosity for further exploration into the impact of social movements on the revolution's trajectory.

Exhibition

At the conclusion of the project, host an interactive exhibition event where students showcase their multimedia presentations or video documentaries. Invite community members, local historians, and other classes to partake in the viewing and discussion. Utilize both physical and virtual spaces to display students' work, including student-created interviews and primary source analyses, fostering broader engagement and dialogue on the Russian Revolution's social movements. Encourage attendees to provide feedback through digital comment boards linked to each student project, offering an opportunity for public interaction with the material.
