Purpose

This project aims to engage 6th-grade students in hands-on statistical analysis through real-world data collection and interpretation. Using project-based learning principles, students develop skills in calculating mean, median, mode, and range, while applying these concepts to data gathered from their school community. The project fosters collaboration, critical thinking, and communication as students work in groups, create interactive presentations, and share their findings. Through exhibitions and peer feedback, students refine their understanding and articulate their learning journey in multimedia formats, enhancing their academic and social-emotional growth.

Learning goals

Students will develop a clear understanding of statistical questions and data analysis, including how to calculate and apply mean, median, mode, and range to real-world situations. They will enhance their ability to summarize and display data using various plotting methods and interpret the center, spread, and overall shape of data sets. Throughout the project, students will refine collaboration, critical thinking, and communication skills by engaging with peers and presenting findings to others, culminating in a comprehensive reflection on their learning journey.

Standards
  • [Common Core] CCSS.Math.Content.6.SP.B.5 - Summarize numerical data sets in relation to their context, such as by:
  • [Common Core] CCSS.Math.Content.6.SP.A.2 - Understand that a set of data collected to answer a statistical question has a distribution which can be described by its center, spread, and overall shape.
  • [Common Core] CCSS.Math.Content.6.SP.A.1 - Recognize a statistical question as one that anticipates variability in the data related to the question and accounts for it in the answers.
  • [Common Core] CCSS.Math.Content.6.SP.A.3 - Recognize that a measure of center for a numerical data set summarizes all of its values with a single number, while a measure of variation describes how its values vary with a single number.
  • [Common Core] CCSS.Math.Content.6.SP.B.4 - Display numerical data in plots on a number line, including dot plots, histograms, and box plots.

Products

Students will collaboratively craft interactive games and demonstrations that teach other classes about mean, median, mode, and range using the data they have collected. Each group will produce a multimedia presentation reflecting their growth in statistical and social-emotional understanding, showcased on a dedicated class reflection day. Additionally, the class will develop a 'Day in the Life of a 6th Grader' gallery, presenting data-driven narratives on trends like sleep, spending, and screen time to engage viewers in meaningful statistical storytelling.

Launch

Begin with a dynamic 'Statistical Scavenger Hunt' where 6th-grade students navigate the school environment to collect data. Activities include counting items, such as classroom chairs or books, and conducting quick surveys with peers on everyday topics. This engaging exploration encourages teamwork and sparks curiosity about potential statistical questions. The collected data sets the stage for an in-depth investigation into mean, median, mode, and range, laying a practical foundation for the project's essential question.

Exhibition

The exhibition will feature small group presentations where students showcase their projects to peers within the school. Each group will present an engaging narrative, such as 'A Day in the Life of a 6th Grader,' illustrating trends and data they have gathered and analyzed. The interactive demonstrations or games designed by each group will teach others about calculating and using mean, median, mode, and range. This exhibition will not only display the mathematical skills developed but also highlight how students have interpreted and applied these concepts to real-world contexts. Students' multimedia reflections on their learning journey will be displayed, inviting viewers to explore the evolution of their statistical understanding and social-emotional skill development.
