Purpose

The purpose of this learning experience is to engage students in the exploration of fitness technology as it relates to personal and community health improvements. Through hands-on activities, students will co-design wearable fitness trackers, investigating how technological innovation can enhance wellness. Collaborating with peers and community partners, students will dive into critical thinking about biomedical tools while developing skills that impact their lifelong physical and emotional health.

Learning goals

Students in this learning experience will explore the intersection of civil engineering and fitness technology, leveraging their knowledge to build wearable fitness trackers. They will analyze the FITT principle, developing a collaborative physical fitness plan that monitors personal fitness goals and integrates biomedical engineering concepts. Through this project, students will strengthen their competencies in collaboration, effective communication, critical thinking, and problem-solving. They will engage with community partners to deepen their understanding of technology's role in enhancing wellness and reflect on their personal growth and academic mindset through project exhibitions and presentations.

Products

Students will collaboratively design and construct wearable fitness trackers that utilize simple electronics to measure key exercise metrics like heart rate and step count. These trackers will showcase students' understanding of technology's role in enhancing personal fitness and wellness. The final prototype will be presented during the Wellness Wonder Walk, allowing students to demonstrate their engineering skills and creativity. Throughout the project, students will also participate in creating informative posters that explain their design process and the science behind biomedical tools.

Launch

Students will kick off the project with a dynamic 'Biomedical Innovation Bootcamp,' exploring interactive stations showcasing cutting-edge biomedical tools and technologies related to fitness and wellness. Each station provides hands-on activities, sparking excitement and curiosity while laying the foundation for students to engage deeply with the essential question of how technology impacts fitness and wellness. This immersive experience sets the stage for students to collaborate, think critically, and explore innovative approaches throughout their project journey.

Exhibition

Students will host a 'Wellness Wonder Walk' showcasing their biomedical engineering and fitness projects through interactive presentations and live demos. Visitors will explore classroom stations where students explain their design processes, demonstrate the functionality of their wearable fitness trackers, and reflect on their learning journey. This event enables students to engage with the community, receive feedback, and celebrate their collective accomplishments in advancing fitness and wellness technology.
