Purpose

This project aims to foster a sense of cultural appreciation and community connection by involving students in a hands-on learning experience with their families and local community. Through the exploration of herbs and spices used in various ethnic cuisines, students will cultivate a school garden that reflects the rich diversity of their community. By engaging in communication, collaboration, and critical thinking, students will deepen their understanding of multiculturalism and develop essential life skills. The project promotes real-world learning by integrating academic content with authentic community-based interactions, culminating in a celebratory exhibition to showcase students' collective efforts and learning.

Learning goals

Students will explore the cultural significance and environmental adaptation of herbs and spices by engaging in collaborative research with peers and family members. They will practice effective communication through presentations and written reflections, enhancing understanding of multicultural perspectives. By co-designing projects and making shared decisions, students will strengthen critical thinking and problem-solving skills. They will learn how to create digital content such as podcasts and slideshows, and apply horticultural skills to cultivate a diverse school garden. Through self-directed learning and feedback, students will reflect on their growth, fostering both academic and socio-emotional development.

Products

Students will create a diverse range of products, including a thriving school garden filled with herbs and spices curated from family recipes. They'll also produce engaging slide shows that showcase the multicultural origins of these ingredients, complemented by written reports and creative poems that highlight cultural connections. Additionally, students will develop podcasts to share personal stories and insights from the project, fostering community and a deeper understanding of cultural diversity.

Launch

To launch the project, organize a kickoff event where students invite their families to participate in a multicultural cooking day. This event will highlight the various herbs and spices used in Hispanic, African-American, and Asian cuisines, with each family sharing a dish that features their favorite ingredients. Students will record interviews with family members about the significance of these spices, fostering a collaborative environment from the start. This shared experience will spark curiosity and set the stage for creative engagement throughout the project.

Exhibition

To exhibit their learning, students will present their final projects in a school-wide community event, showcasing their slideshows, podcasts, and written reports. Parents, teachers, and local community partners will be invited to interact with the diverse cultural contributions represented through the garden's herbs and spices. Students will participate in guided garden tours, explaining the relationship between the herbs planted and the cultural cuisine highlighted. The exhibition will also include a live poetry reading, where students share original poems inspired by their family's unique use of herbs and spices. This event will serve as both a celebration of multicultural understanding and a demonstration of students' critical thinking and communication skills.
