Purpose

This project empowers students to design and implement a comprehensive survival guide that equips them to address school challenges effectively. Through hands-on experiences, students collaboratively develop strategies and tools to foster a supportive community where everyone feels valued and capable of thriving. By integrating personal strengths and overcoming challenges, learners grow their self-knowledge, communication, and collaboration skills, creating resource kits for new students to ensure a welcoming and cooperative school environment.

Learning goals

Through this project, students will develop resource kits for new students that incorporate knowledge on forming supportive school communities. They will practice effective communication and collaboration skills by presenting these kits to peers and community partners. Additionally, students will hone self-directed learning by reflecting on personal strengths and challenges through portfolio reviews, while enhancing critical thinking by addressing complex school-related scenarios during the 'Survival Quest.'

Competencies
  • Self Directed Learning - Students use teacher and peer feedback and self-reflection to monitor and direct their own learning while building self knowledge both in and out of the classroom.
  • Effective Communication - Students practice listening to understand, communicating with empathy, and share their learning through exhibiting, presenting and reflecting on their work.
  • Collaboration - Students co-design projects with peers, exercise shared-decision making, strengthen relational agency, resolve conflict, and assume leadership roles.
  • Content Expertise - Students develop key competencies, skills, and dispositions with ample opportunities to apply knowledge and engage in work that matters to them.
  • Critical Thinking & Problem Solving - Students consider a variety of innovative approaches to address and understand complex questions that are authentic and important to their communities.

Products

During the project, students will collaboratively develop a digital toolkit app tailored for incoming students to facilitate successful navigation through school challenges. This app will be personalized with multimedia content, including videos, notes, and quizzes, reflecting their learning from community workshops and survival quest activities. Additionally, students will create visual pieces for a virtual gallery walk, showcasing insights from their team-building and mental health sessions, thus fostering a supportive community atmosphere. Each product encourages authentic engagement and demonstrates mastery of communication, collaboration, and critical thinking competencies.

Launch

Begin the project with an exciting day labeled "Survival Quest," where students face interactive obstacle challenges inspired by real school scenarios. These tasks will require students to work together and leverage effective communication as they navigate obstacles that mimic common school challenges. This immersive start will set the stage for deeper inquiry into the essential questions, encouraging an engaging and collaborative atmosphere right from the beginning.

Exhibition

At the conclusion of the project, students will organize a community event to present their digital toolkit app and resource kits. Each team will set up booths where they offer demonstrations and interactive experiences for parents, teachers, and community partners. Attendees can engage with the personalized content developed by students and provide feedback for refinement. The exhibition will also feature presentations on resilient coping strategies learned during mental health workshops, illustrating the students' growth and understanding. Lastly, a gallery walk displaying students' visual pieces on creating supportive school environments will allow visitors to appreciate their insights and creativity.
