The Challenge

In many communities, including Dallas, language disparities present challenges for Spanish-speaking students in accessing educational resources and receiving equitable support, impacting their ability to excel academically and integrate effectively into diverse classroom settings. This gap in language proficiency not only hinders individual academic success but also limits opportunities for meaningful participation in broader community interactions.

Challenge Question

How can we effectively convey complex Spanish grammar concepts to our peers through creative teaching methods, while bridging language gaps in real-world scenarios like the Dallas community?

Competencies
  • Effective Communication - Students practice listening to understand, communicating with empathy, and share their learning through exhibiting, presenting and reflecting on their work.
  • Critical Thinking & Problem Solving - Students consider a variety of innovative approaches to address and understand complex questions that are authentic and important to their communities.
  • Collaboration - Students co-design projects with peers, exercise shared-decision making, strengthen relational agency, resolve conflict, and assume leadership roles.
  • Self Directed Learning - Students use teacher and peer feedback and self-reflection to monitor and direct their own learning while building self knowledge both in and out of the classroom.
  • Content Expertise - Students develop key competencies, skills, and dispositions with ample opportunities to apply knowledge and engage in work that matters to them.

Learning Partners and Clients

Dallas-based Spanish-speaking communities and Greenhill School students provide valuable collaboration opportunities for this project. Partnering with these groups enables learners to engage with native speakers, allowing for authentic language application. They serve as both a cultural resource and an audience for the performance tasks, ensuring practical and impactful learning experiences.
