Purpose

The purpose of this learning experience is to engage students in critical exploration and robust dialogue about the impact of 'sameness' on community safety and security, rooted in the textual analysis of "The Giver." Through collaborative research, debate, and reflection, students will develop vital competencies in critical thinking, problem solving, and communication while establishing a personal connection to the community discussion. By assuming roles as characters from the novel, they will examine and express diverse perspectives, fostering a deeper understanding of identity and belonging in their real-world communities.

Learning goals

Students will critically analyze the concept of 'sameness' as presented in "The Giver," examining its effects on community safety and dynamics. They will develop persuasive arguments based on textual evidence, present their positions to peers, and refine their ideas through constructive feedback. By participating in debates and interactive exhibitions, students will strengthen their collaboration skills, communicate effectively, and engage with diverse perspectives on community issues. Through reflection and creative expression, students will deepen their understanding of how 'sameness' impacts personal and communal identities.

  • [Wisconsin] SL1 - Prepare for and participate effectively in a range of conversations and collaborations with diverse partners, building on others' ideas and expressing their own clearly and persuasively.
Competencies
  • Critical Thinking & Problem Solving - Students consider a variety of innovative approaches to address and understand complex questions that are authentic and important to their communities.
  • Collaboration - Students co-design projects with peers, exercise shared-decision making, strengthen relational agency, resolve conflict, and assume leadership roles.
  • Academic Mindset - Students establish a sense of place, identity, and belonging to increase self-efficacy while engaging in critical reflection and action.

Products

Students will collaboratively create an interactive digital presentation using Canva or Google Slides. This presentation will visually articulate the pros and cons of 'sameness' as depicted in 'The Giver', supported with textual evidence from the book. Additionally, students will embed personal reflections drawn from the roundtable discussions, highlighting their own perspectives on safety and security within their community. Each presentation will be part of the 'Diverse Voices Fair' exhibition, allowing students to showcase their understanding and share insights with larger community audiences.

Launch

Begin the lesson with an immersive role-play workshop where students take on the roles of characters from "The Giver," examining the varied perspectives on sameness and safety within the fictional community. Set the tone by transforming the classroom into a simulated community council meeting, with students presenting their characters' views. Encourage students to actively engage and debate the implications of sameness in ensuring safety and security, laying a foundation for deeper exploration throughout the lesson.

Exhibition

Host the 'Diverse Voices Fair', where each student designs an interactive booth showcasing diverse perspectives from the sameness debate, incorporating multimedia presentations, art pieces, and dramatic performances. Arrange the space to facilitate open dialogue, inviting community members to engage directly with the students' work. Each booth should highlight key themes from 'The Giver', connect them to real-world community dynamics, and encourage visitors to participate in thoughtful discussions.
